Go back to the OT and read about Abraham and Melchisadec.

Genesis l4:l8
"And Melchizedek, king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God."

Go over into the book of Leviticus and we find that the Levitical priesthood was to be supported by the tithes and offerings of the children of Israel, so Abraham paid respect to him, recognized him as the priest of God, and made offering to him.

We see below, this was carried over into the New Covenant period of the NT, in the New Testament Book of Hebrews:

Hebrews 7:l-3
"For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is King of peace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life, but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually."

This is the origin of giving a tenth to the Church.

No there is no such verse. A tithe means a tenth. And if you count the kinds of tithes that the ISRAELITES had to pay, it is about 33%. And it's not in the form of money, but livestock or other food produce. And it is only for the economy of Israel and its temple services and support for the Levitical priesthood.

In the NT there is no command to tithe. In fact, there was no salaried pastorate! Today pastors preach tithing because they have wrongly (and perhaps even knowingly) used the OT passages and played a huge guilt trip on Christians. They need a constant flow of income to support the machinery of the institutional church, which is mainly salaries and buildings.

Leviticus 27:30 , and Malachi 3:8 There are more verses in OT , 2 in new testament Matthew 23:23 , Luke 11:42....Tithing is to go to the people who do the true work of God . To help spread his word to the ends of the world. In the O T if you didn't have money you gave 1/10 of your yearly produce to the church. That is how God provides for the people who do his work.

The answer is no. In the Old Testament, tithing was of animals and produce, not money. Not everyone did tithe. The example of Melchizedek comes from the spoils of war.

In the New Testament, Galatians tells us that we are not under the old law and no longer offer animals and produce, much of which was to feed the tribe of priests.

As far as giving from our income, of course we support our churches, pastors, missions, food banks, those in need, but it's not a 10% tithe.

2 Cor 9:7 “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

We all need to give as we are able and according to our hearts, but the 10% money tithe is not Biblical.

Christians who want to please the Lord often have questions about tithing. The dictionary defines the word "tithe" as "a tenth part of something paid as a voluntary contribution or as a tax especially for the support of a religious establishment." It was a common practice in the Old Testament and required of members of the nation of Israel.
Many Christians believe that this principle of giving one-tenth should be carried over to the New Testament in giving to the church and other Christian organizations. Many found that God's blessing upon the nine-tenths, when they tithe, helps it to go farther than ten-tenths without His blessing. However, even then the question as to whether to tithe from one's net or gross income is not answered in Scripture, nor is the question of whether to give it all to the local church or to include other ministries. I feel that such decisions should be based on personal conviction. Other Christians who tithe do so simply because they respect the Old Testament principle and find it a helpful place to begin in their giving. They do not believe, however, that tithing is a New Testament obligation. It is not mentioned in the New Testament except where it is describing Old Testament practices, or in the Gospels where Jesus is addressing people who were under the Old Testament law. Note Jesus' comments to the Pharisees in Luke 11:42.
A New Testament teaching on giving which may be helpful to you is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2: "On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income." This passage brings out four points: we should give individually, regularly, methodically, and proportionately. The matter of your giving is between you and God, and He always takes into account our circumstances. He knows when they are beyond our power to direct and control. The important thing is that we see giving as a privilege and not a burden. It should not be out of a sense of duty, but rather out of love for the Lord and a desire to see His kingdom advanced. Second Corinthians 9:6-7 says: "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

The deeper question, you see, is this: What has priority in our lives? Is Christ really first—or do we put ourselves and our own desires first? Make sure Christ is first in your life, and then ask Him to guide you.

Since Augustin and Rocky road have given you the exact scriptures from the bible where Abraham paid his tithes to Melchizedek and we all are requested to pay as per the scriptures and blessings promised in the book of Malachi, I second them. I also want to give you my experience that I have been paying my tithes now for years and I dont find it a problem. On the contrary I have been blessed again and again as per the blessing in Malachi - exactly as per each and every word and I have been blessed both materially and spiritually beyond my wildest dreams and not a single penny has gone to waste without my knowledge. Also my home and assets have been protected as a direct result of this.

Another thing I would like to point out is Jesus came not to change the laws but to fulfil them. We still have to keep the sabbath day holy as it is one of the ten commandments. By keeping the sabbath holy, you strongly feel the presence or direction of the Holy spirit and I believe this is what Jesus wanted us to experience when he was resurrected and promised to send the Holy Spirit to guide us. Of course you need to be wise. If your family or neighbour is sick and needs your help to take them to the doctor you need to do it rather than not do it telling it is the sabbath.

I have tested these two and found them true and not a burden at all. In fact I have enjoyed the direct blessings of having kept these two requirements and that in itself have given me the craving and security to continue to do so.

Another tip is that all the commandments and laws have direct blessings (you will find them in the Bible) and nothing is forced upon you. If you choose to follow them you have the promised blessings if not you have to face the consequences. Simple.

Read this article, it may help you. Tithing is a way to pick your pocket and make you believe at the same time that, Jesus or God, said it was the right thing to do. Neither ever said anything of the kind.
If you have to pay a fee to be welcomed into your church, you are in the wrong church. God's love and wisdom are free and always will be. Jesus was terribly poor, his work was free to all of mankind. Christ didn't make his followers buy tickets to hear him speak, he sat down among them and talked to them, free of charge. Remember that.
Churches need money to run efficiently, and asking for donations to help is fine, but there are limits. But ordering people to tithe or pay a percentage of their annual salary to the church is just highway robbery and spiritual extortion.

My favorite question! Yes, it did! IN THE OLD TESTAMENT!!!!! Jesus came to earth to fulfill the Law, and did so with incredible success. He came to set us free, not only from the penalty of having transgressed the Law, but to free us from the bondage to the Law. Thus He brought into play a new Law, a NEW TESTAMENT of grace. If you want to tithe (that is, to give 10% of your income) to a religious organization, please do so, especially if you honestly feel God leading you to do so. But do not enslave yourself to tithe if you don't, and don't let anyone tell you you have to tithe to maintain your relationship with God. Just as Jesus freed us from slavery to the Sabbath ("...the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath"), he freed us from the necessity of having to fulfill the Law. The New Testament Christian need only believe in Jesus, because all we can do anyway is claim His righteousness. ONLY the blood of Jesus will be adequate compensation for sin; NOTHING else even comes close. Here's the key, my friend...remove your shackles!

Dellow lies! You are NOT to give your tithes to him. He is misinterpreting the Bible. You are to give your tithes to ME. I am the only way to salvation and he is a liar from the pit of hell. If you give me all your money, I can make you happy and healthy and you will have happiness after death also...if you give me enough money, I will arrange it so that you won't even have to die.

Dellow can not offer you as much as I can. Trust me. Believe in me. Follow me. And I command you to tell your friends of me or you will be cast into hell. If you can not follow me in love, follow me in FEAR! Just fork over that money and don't give a dime to that Dellow imposter!!!

If you are a believer in the true word of God, you must do this and not only 10% as asked in the Old Testement but EVERYTHING YOU OWN as commanded by our own Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and his messanger Blakenwite!

(The sad thing is someone is going to take this seriously and ask me where to mail the money and ask me to heal their son whose leg was amputated in a car accident. Some people believe everything they hear or read. REALLY SAD!)
