Sounds to me as if the older cat is trying to show dominance over the younger one.

Is this something new or has it happend before?

If it's a new behavior I'd call the Vet and ask their opinion (anytime a cats behavior changes all of a sudden you should consult a Vet just to be on the safe side)...I don't think there's a need for a Vet visit just yet...but for your own peace of mind I'd just ask the Vet what he thinks.

Not to worry-cats and dogs will mount each other as a means of establishing dominance. It has nothing to do with gender, sexuality or whether they have been neutered or spayed. In other words it's perfectly normal. If you catch them at it it's ok to tell them to stop but they will still do it when you're not around to correct them.

Don't worry it's a dominance thing.. the older cat is feeling his age and is just letting the younger one know he's still in charge.. you will probably notice it becomes less frequent once they have settled the heirarchy again.. they are a good age..

It's either dominance or Alzheimer's (yes, cats get it too). It sounds like the old comedian George Burns who at 99 years old said he still chases his secretary, but forgets why!

Your older cat has a classic case of pre-neutered trace memory.

Yh, but they still have needs. Just because they have had their balls cut off doesn't mean that they suddenly don't want sex. It happens with most animals, my nan's dogs did that and they are both neutered.
