There are many ways to download music. None of them require a CD burner. If you want to capture, or rip, music directly from a CD, you'll need a CD-rom drive. You could also download music from the internet. Music can also be downloaded from another device such as an IPOD, flash drive, external hard drive, over a network from another computer... There are several ways to get music on your computer.

If you wanted to put that music on a CD, then you would need a CD burner. That would be the only need and applicable function of a CD burner concerning this topic.

Music on your computer could be directly transferred to some other portable music player, like an IPOD, without the use of a CD burner.

You don't need a burner to listen, but you may need one to play tunes elsewhere.

They're cheap, and available everywhere!
