I was at dinner at a friends house who is a vegetarian and we were treated to an evening of lectures on cruelty to animals while we sat on soft leather furniture. I have no problem with people having opinions and beleifs but how can it be wrong to eat a dead animal but ok to sit on one or wear one? Their excuse was that leather was a bi product and they were also against waste!!! what a crock......anyone got better excuse for this hypocrosy?

This really is hypocrisy if you had to be lectured all night - poor you!

REAL vegetarians don't tend to go in for leather clothes, furniture etc only the pretend 'vegetarianism is trendy' mob.
REAL vegetarians don't tend to lecture you either, they just go quietly about their meat-free lifestyle and will only mention it when someone asks a question.

first, that statement is rather broad.

second people are vegatarians for many different reasons, some are just becuase they don't like meat or can't eat, so therefore it has nothing to do with the actual killing of the animal.

others are vegetarians for ecological reasons. Therefore one may not buy leather shoes at the store new, but if they are used from a thriftstore or secondhand some vegetarians will obviously use them because it would be wasteful not to. they are not participating in the purchasing of new leather products but if it's used it would be more cruel to just trash items. and so how is this an excuse? it makes sense.

Most vegetarians do not justify wearing leather. Remember that it is not the eating of meat but the killing of an animal to which vegetarians object. This person is of a peculiar opinion and they do not represent all vegetarians. I'm sure you can find members of every moral, social, ethnic, religious etc group who behave singularly and make the others look foolish, but we must not judge all based on few. Radical terroists come to mind; we cannot judge all Muslims based on the insane actions of a small minority.

lol - yes, i have a vegatarian friend (she has been for 20 yrs)who wears leather. she also gives the excuse of it being an animal bi product. we debated about it, she said she doesn't want it to go to waste etc etc but i asked her, well what if people are killing the animals to make shoes/coats, then wouldn't the meat be the bi product, and if that's so, then who's the vegetarian now, you or me?
that put her in her place!

Some "Vegies" don't eat meat for other reasons than the cruelty issue. However those who give that reason and are full on self-righteous about it are definately hypocrites.
However it is dificult in this world to take stances like this to a full degree. They should be less vocal towards us lesser mortals who can't resist a nice bit of roast beef or a bacon sarnie now and again.

i'm not a vegetarian but i still don't wear or sit on leather. I make sure my furniture and shoes are cloth, not animal skin. I just think it's mean to club baby seals and slaughter poor fluffy chinchillas just so someone can have a pretty coat.

I asked my freind that once. She was imposing her vegetarian beliefs on me whilst continuing to wear leather shoes,
Vegetarians usually say that leather is the after product anmd that the animal is not killed for the leather anyway but I say to that it is still an animal and in this day and age there are plenty of websites they could visit that sell "vegetarian shoes"

It's absolute hypocrisy!!

This same "friend" told me off for driving a small 1.3 litre
4 x 4 whilst owning a large estate car herself!!

Leather can be made from skins of dead animals, who die of age or disease

There is no need to kill animals just for leather !

I know lots of vegetarians and vegans and none of them wear leather, fur or own furniture made of leather - your friends are posers!

Leather IS a by-product. Cows aren't killed for their skins. Are you one of those pasty-faced, under-nourished hippies too? Get a nice steak down your throat and stop being such a bore
