How can wearing a helmet in a car become socially acceptable?

Cars are not designed with adaquate headroom to accomodate people with a helmet. Seats and roofs would have to be redesigned. Airbags, particularly the side curtain ones are a better solution.

I think it hasn't occurred to most people, including myself, but I would bet that some type of ad campaign might get the ball rolling. Though, I'd bet there would need to be scientific studies done that showed wearing a helmet during a crash would significantly improve your chances of not being seriously injured or killed during an accident. Unless someone could show a major statistical advantage I don't think most people would think wearing a helmet was worth the discomfort. Look at the seat-belt. It's a fact they help hugely in an accident and some people still, foolishly, refuse to wear one.

P.S. Good Q. I think you have a good idea, especially for children. Also, a helmet would definitely help prevent airbag injuries, especially for short or small people and those under 90lbs.

I wear a helmet on my motorcycle because there isn't anything else protecting me if I get in an accident. But my car has seat belts, air bags, crumpe zones, and a lot of other features to protect me as it is. And most cars don't really have the headroom I need to comfortably wear a helmet. I only wear a helmet in a car when I go racing, since that's what the rules require.

If you wanted people to wear helmets in cars on public roads, here's the only thing that would convince me to wear mine: Remove all safety devices from the cars so I don't have anything else protecting me.

Cars are designed with not enough headroom. It is easier to look around with no helmet. It is much safer to wear a seatbelt and buy a car with a lot of airbags, especially the newer airbags in the last few years. There are "side curtain" airbags specifically designed to protect your head, and headrests work best with your head in them, not a huge piece of foam.

Well how bout you start that trend and we will follow suit ...sometime..Frankly I want to see 180 degrees to AVOID accidents not wonder what happens to me when I'm in one..That's why we have airbags..helmet might reduce head injuries but would increase neck injuries..the force has to go somewhere

I don't particularly want to ride around everywhere with a brain-bucket on my head. I think they need to further the technology to make the cars safer, rather than subject us to wearing helmets.

A helmet will not do anything but mess your hair. There are already enough safety features, plus, I am a very safe driver too.

Because minimal extra safety benefit from helmet does not justify serious extra inconvenience form wearing it.
