I'm 13 and all my life people have told me I'm such a great artist but sometimes when I think about what I want to be when I grow up its not about passion its about profit, but I love doing art, I always come out on top in all my art workshops, I made a sculpture of a man praying to God in my free period, when I was 6 I sketched my grandmother while she was sleeping and it looked just like her,I painted a wounded angel while I was listening to "the rescue-american hi fi" but if I do become an artist what if no one likes what I make? I'll just be throwing my life away, my dad said he wants me to be a nurse so that I can work in London, because he told me they needed nurses there but blood makes me dizzy and nursing would be my second choice for my dad.

I'm an artist and really, to do art as the main focus of your life, its a tough road. Generally, its something you have to do. If you're an artist, your an artist at heart and its a need, a desire, a must to create. You're young still, don't worry about it yet. Explore life, do art, its a blast. Explore different arts, and different avenues. Too many people are trying to map their futures out too early. You're 13! Have fun.
Art can lead you down a lot of avenues if thats what you choose, and not alot of them are heavy on the financial end if you know what i mean. Gallery artist, graphic artist, comic artist, commercial art, architect, teacher, business owner (gallery or arts center or ?), critic (ag!), fashion design, animator, game design, etc. Its endless, but it all depends on what you want. Follow your heart. You can always do art for fun and work a 'real' job. I can't do it full time. I work other jobs to support it & make extra money with art. And luckily i have a wonderful wife that understands this side of me and supports me.
Like i said, follow your heart. You'll know (in a few years) if you're an artist. Being an artist isn't like anything else in the world. You don't need a diploma to tell you that you're an artist. You don't need a piece of paper. If you are, you are. Its in your soul. And there is nothing like creating something from nothing and seeing your dreams visualized!
good luck.

There are lots of careers in the visual arts where you can make a good living. Graphic/computer arts is a fast growing field where artists can free-lance (work independently) from anywhere or at a company. There is also interior design, landscape architecture, architecture, fashion design, advertising, product packaging, illustration...

I teach art at a private school and I have a friend who designs wallpaper for a company.

There are lots of ways to use your talents to train for a career that will be profitable. Saying that you want to just "be an artist" is like saying you want to be a rock star! Doesn't happen for many. But turning what you do into a job will be a satisfying way to take care of yourself.

You have a while to decide what you want to be. If it would help calm your dad, send off for information on art schools and universities with art programs so you can both check out the options in visual arts.

Good luck to you!

Become a nurse to ensure that you earn your bread honourably, but continue Art education formally and acquire more and more skills on the technique besides developing your natural flair for aesthetics and accurate observation. Soon your art will get enough recognition to fetch better prices for your work. Never , I repeat Never , sell your work cheap. It will help only the profiteers to sell your products in auctions later for Millions, but will not give you anything. Secondly, keep a diary of all the work you do on each painting and document each stage of the work with a Camera showing date and time. Finally, photograph each work you put up at an auction or exhibition and label them with a serial number, file IPR papers for them with the legal IPR office. This will enable you to claim your legal rights if and when any situation for that arises.

Everyday, I see scores of people dragging their behinds to go to a job they don't really give two-shits about so that they can get the money to buy all the things that they don't need. Aren't all of them throwing their lives away?
If art is something you're really good at and really passionate about, why are you so concerned about whether that is profitable or not? You gotta figure out what you really want for yourself.

Throwing your life away is being something for someone else
in the face of a fervent calling. Dreams, not money, are meant to be chased. If tomorrow were your last day, would you end it satisfied?

Yes, you should. I think you become an artist from the day you start thinking about it.
