I have had my heart set on a Whippet for a long time (yes, I did all the proper research. It’s not just a whim), but I’m about to give up and go with my second or third choice breed (both of which I would be more than happy with if a Whippet is an impossibility).

For the past year or so, I have been trying to find a whippet breeder within close driving distance (3 hours maximum; I’m relying on someone else for my ride, and I don’t want to ask for much more than that from them) from Erie, PA. I have checked dozens, if not hundreds, of online sites that list breeders and/or puppies available. The closest place I was able to find was 6+ hours away. I think it would be hard and scary for a pup to be shipped to me, so I’d really like to pick it up myself.

I even tried getting help from the American Whippet Club, but they surprisingly weren’t very helpful and the woman assigned to help me was only interested in helping me if I wanted to buy one of her puppies, and even when I expressed interest, she often took weeks to respond to my e-mails. It was an overall very frustrating experience.

Please do not suggest the Humane Society, as whippets only VERY, VERY rarely come through ours. I have also checked Whippet Rescue, and the closest dog is 10+ hours away. I am also really interested in a puppy, since I would like for my dogs to be close to the same age, and I have a 7 month old now. Rescue Whippets are usually 5 years+.

If you know of any breeders even close to my area, please let me know.

Whippet breeder referral is generally pretty good, I would try again. I would also join the yahoo group whippetsanity and ask there, plus the members are a wealth of information. You can also go to a show (look on infodog.com) or a field trial (asfa.org) to meet breeders. There are breeders in your area, you just have to find them.

Don't give up and settle for some other breed. Whippets are absolutely wonderful and like no other breed. I have puppies going to their new homes over the next week, but I am a long way from Pa.

Definately try the whippetsanity group, lots of breeders there.
