Karma = law of cause & effect if one simplifies the meaning to it. An ellobarate explanation would be "karma is a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do.Karma is not about retribution,vengeance,punishment or reward, it simply deals with what is.The effects of all deeds actively create past, present & future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life , and the pain & joy it brings to others. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through ones present life and all past and future lives as well. It is cumulative "
I personally believe it is for real. All actions should have a reaction that balance out that transaction.Everything that is in this world is balanced out in every way.Good actions have and will receive good rewards and v.v. I bet there are instances in your life that you have experienced similar situations. Something good or bad you did in the past coming back to you at a time totally unexpected or mostly needed. Think about it and you might be quite suprised.

If you have read about Newtons' laws, you may desist from asking this question. Newton proved 'Every action gets equal and opposite reaction" It is equally true in respect of our life also. If you hurt somebody, the bad feeling it has created in the mind of other won't be wiped. You will get into the same circumstance and somebody will hurt you with the same magnitude. You may not realize that it is the result of your own action. In one life time we will not be able to retribute for all the actions committed by us. Hence the mind at the death of the body carried all the impressions and return everything you have done with equal velocity. Good for good and bad for bad. This is known as Karma and no body including sages and saints can not escape the same. nagarajan.

karma means action.
When you make a choice; that is taking an action. When you take the action there is consequences for either action (both good and bad) depending on the action was good or bad.

it's when you do something (good or bad) and that something is also returned to you by someone else...
as a concept, i think it is real... perhaps not in the exact sense that people who believe in karma think, but it's something. everything in this world is a reaction of everything else that is going around us. do good and you'll be treated good. do bad and something bad will always come around. it all depends on how people take it and view things... but it's there.
