When I was in secondary school we could only learn French or German, now only 10 years later (I'm 24 nearly 25 - UK), the same school is teaching French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Sign Language. I think everyone should know a second language, you never know when you might need it. I am fluent in french, and I am currently learning Sign Language with my daughter, she is 4 and they are teaching it in her school, as part of the general curriculum. I think it is great that she has this chance.
I agree that students today should have the choice of what they learn. I would have loved to learn Russian.

No, if everyone had their own choice, there would be far too many language classes. Most schools couldn't support them.

It might be a good idea but it's not possible.
A teacher would have to be employed to teach each language. Most schools don't have that kind of money.
