"Well, EXCUSE ME for having serious flaws I refuse to work on!" -Homer Simpson
Seriously, don't waste your time on anyone with no self-worth, ambition, or goals in life. It's a no-brainer.

two issues here, first the lie. Whilst no lie is good or excusable, he obviously did this because its a big thing not being able to read or write and was obviously embarrased and has spent his whole life hiding it from everyone, so to lie about it was "normal" behaviour. Not striving to overcome this given the opportunity is a whole different thing and you need to get to the bottom of the reason why, does he not want to, or did he just find it too difficult and felt overwhelmed, facing something you have lived with as such a big secret for so long cannot be easy, you have to ask him why, and help him from there, good luck to you

If you love him yes, but it looks like you may be better off leaving him. If you offered to help get his life back on track and he refused, it shows how much he really wants to support his family.
I would talk to him and tell him that if he is not going to work with the tutor, that you are not going to be with a man who can't support you.

He is embarassed about being illiterate which is understandable. If he has a job and is happy then maybe leave him alone. He believes he is doing his best I understand you want him to do better but it is up to him.

you leave. He's a liar, and not tying to improve himself, even when the help is free.
There are guys who can read who will work to improve thier life, find one, or you'll be fixing this guy forever.
