Volume license type is released only for companies which don't want to buy 1000 different versions because first of all it's harder to keep track of all of them and secondly hard to maintain. Just think of the troule the "technician" guy would go through when time comes to reinstall the software on all the computers...
So the companies choose the volume license type, meaning they buy a single proudtc but which is licensed for 1000 computers with the same license. It makes lives easier for them but they can be also stolen very easily...

Large companies get a hugely discounted price when they buy hundreds of copies of XP or Vista all at once. "Volume License" versions of Windows use only 1 License code for the whole company, but there is a fixed number of times the corporate code can be used.

Microsoft keeps track or the number of times the Corporate Key is used AND knows the corporate IP address of the company too.

So, if you try to illegally use a Volume Licensed version of Windows, Microsoft will hunt you down, by mismatched IP, and sue your sorry butt off.
