Most of the generic products are made by a brand name company for a specific store or chain of stores. This goes for all kinds of products. The generic is cheaper, because they don't have all the advertising costs that a brand name product does. I prefer to pay for the product, not all the stupid commercials, so we use a lot of generics, and many of them are even better than the brand names.

It's amazing how we have all been brain washed by advertisements and fancy packaging.

If it is true that Ol' Roy and Eukanuba are the same, it is a very disturbing revelation about American consumer preferences.

However, it doesn't come as a big suprise to me as I gave myself a little dose of reality recently with a product I use everyday.

I was using a fairly expensive face cream and switched to the generic Wal-Mart version a few months ago. Both have identical formulas, the expensive one has nicer packaging. I loved using it and a large tube would be gone in three weeks. I barely touch the Wal-mart brand one. It makes me feel....cheap.

I think that consumers feel the same way when buying the Wal-mart brand dog food (especially considering the dumb name). Buying foods like Eukanuba make us feel like better pet owners. We need to examine the logic behind those emotions to make more informed decisions about what products to buy.

Actually what should really bother you is that Taco Bell gets it meat product from Purina. I had a friend who use to work at Taco Bell, and had to be careful when the bagged meat product would come in. Apparently the checkered Purina logo was rather large on the bag, and they didn't want the customers catching on to the truth that they where eating the same grade of meat used for dog food. From what I now understand, the logo has either been shrunken down, or has been removed all together. I'd always wondered why dog food smelt familiar.

Same formula? Are you certain of this? I've always heard Ol' Roy was a bad food but I thought Eukanuba was decent for dogs that needed certain amounts of fats in their diet. I don't know if Sharpei people still feed Eukanuba to their dogs since all the holistic foods have come about but they once did.
I'm still FURIOUS about the poisoning although I don't feed any of those foods.

They are not the same thing, both companies simply used Menu Foods as their production plant, and therefore had the same source of ingredients. Read the back of the bags, you'll see the differences

That happens with many products unfortunalty. I guess they think the packaging is worth so much more but it basically boils down to greed. As I dog owner I buy Eckanuba because I was under the impression that my dogs were getting a healthier product but like thousands of us I was tricked.
