Mainly because in the culinary world fruits refers to those plant fruits that are sweet and fleshy, examples of which include plums, apples and oranges.
There problem is that many people mix the "Botanical Terms" and the "Culinary terms". Botanically speaking yes the tomato is a fruit, as the eggplant, the avocados, the olives and the pumpkins are too. But in the culinary world they are known prepared and eaten as vegetables, and there is nothing wrong with that.
"Vegetable is a culinary term. Its definition has no scientific value and is somewhat arbitrary and subjective. All parts of herbaceous plants eaten as food by humans, whole or in part, are generally considered vegetables."..."The cuisine terminology for fruits is also arbitrary and subjective."
"Since “vegetable” is not a botanical term, there is no contradiction in referring to a plant part as a fruit while also being considered a vegetable."
By the way Greg is is wrong, some vegetables grow all seasons, and not all fruits grow on trees (pineapples, passion fruit, strawberry, grapes, bananas, and more).
This is not a matter of being educated or not as Dan says, this is just a matter of food clasification in the culinary world. If I ask for a fruit to eat the last thing I want to see on my hand is a sour and unsweeted bloody tomato. But anyway to call vegetable, a tomato is not a big deal; it's only a freaking tomato for God sake!

They don't really know. A banana is a seed, a tomato is a fruit, avocados have fat in them and the most nutritious part of the potato--which is a tuber--is the skin, that people throw away.
I think the reason for all of these things is appearances.
Trying to go by appearances, like a child, is easier than thinking.
In this case it works. I mean you use a banana like a fruit, and a tomato with other vegetables. The other two cases are caused by people not doing any research.

The category of the tomato has been an ever-ongoing debate. In fact, some people even call it a fruit-able (fruit-vegetable). It's got seeds like a fruit, yet used as a vegetable. So no one officially knows what it really is. Though, if you want to get down to the most basic breakdown of it, scientifically it is a fruit, but as I said, not many people truly know that.

Probably because tomatoes are not generally eaten like a peach, apple pears etc. They go well with onions and other veges like in salads.

Because we eat it like a veggie, in salads and on sandwiches and such. So people just assume it is a veggie. Anything with seeds is a fruit.

In the event it's a fruit it includes seeds, otherwise it's a vegetable. And vegetables are usually grown in the ground while fruits are grown in trees.

I guess because it is used in salads and with a lot of dinner meals and vegetables. I think that is what I thought anyway when I was younger.
Tomatoes are awesome!
