when my boyfriend was little he told me how he used to have a golden retriever named Nikki & he said that she was an awesome dog he loved her so much but just about but 2 years ago a few months before he met me they had to put her to sleep because she was 17 years old and she had tumors..he said that golden retrievers are really good dogs & he may want to get another one.
My boyfriends birthday is Sept. 16 and he will be 18
though he'll still be living with his parents where he lives you can only have 2 pets and his parents own a dog and a cat already but i was thinking i could get him a golden retriever puppy anyway, but i'd keep it with me until he moves out of his parents house and gets his own place, the dog would be his but i'd care for it till he gets on his own feet, he'd be able to see it everyday to, my only problem is, i don't know how i'd be able to get one a few days before his birthday so i can have it & give it to him on his b~day, i'd surprise him,
he would be so happy!

i know that
of course i'm going to ask his parents first
but like i said it would stay with me until he gets his own place by that time his parents can't tell him anything as in if he can get another dog or not
the dog would be mine as well though
since i'd be caring for him
i've always wanted a golden retriever as well
they are such loyal loving sweet natured dogs

i have already found a few online at a shelter in my area 7 weeks old but its so sad:-(

though of course they will still be wonderful dogs, they're so cute!!

i did tell him, he already knows that i might get him one, and don't worry
he is very responsible, he takes excellent care of his parents dog, if i knew he wasn't responsible , i wouldn't even bother getting him one,
i wouldn't risk the life of a puppy

Well, I hate to tell you this, but your chances of finding a purebred Retriever from a responsible breeder for $300 is zero.

Even though these are very common dogs now, even puppy mill pups are going to run you at least $600.

I'd also rethink this idea, even though it's incredibly sweet and thoughtful of you.

Dogs are incredibly limiting (not to mention expensive) when you're a young person striking out on your own. They're a huge responsibility. I'd let him know you were thinking about it, but maybe for a future birthday...

Just my opinion!

well the best thing to do is to look in the paper or look in dog fancy magazine. you will find different breeders in there. the only thing is that you will not find one for under $300.00. if you do then it will come from someone that does not care for the animal and only care about getting money. i breed golden retrievers and i ask $500-$600 for mine and they are papered, vet checked, shots and house trained. go to your local pet store and buy a dog fancy magazine and look in the back where the breeder section is and it will give you the different breeders and if you can't find one that way the other option is to go online and go to the golden retriever rescue site and you might be able to get one that way and they may have them for $300.00 or less or maybe around the price you are looking to spend on one.

you know what you would be better off going to the rescue sight to try to get one and you might be able to get one faster that way. i hope you find one because they are the best dogs to have. i have 4 of them and they are the best dogs i have ever had. once you have a golden you don't want another breed. good luck in your search and a happy birthday to your boyfriend.

SHELTER! and i would ask him first.. i know you said surprise but lots of surprises are unexpected and the person isnt ready to commit, money and time.
i know this from experience. believe it or not (i swear im not lieing) i got a golden retreiver as a surprise 3 years ago and lets just say it was a mess. it cost about $1000 each year that ive had her and it takes about 2 years to actually calm down, training was hard and theyre really big, so they get into everything. its a really big commitment. i really wouldnt want another dog end up in a shelter because the owner was stupid and made a mistake. trust me on this one!!

A dog is the worst present to give someone that still lives with their parents!!!! Shelters are overflowing with dogs which were X-mas and b-day presents.
Please don´t become another stastic!!!! Pets always pay the price for our foolish descisions...

Sometime dogs take longer to open their eyes. But after three weeks in the event that they havent opened their eyes you must take them to the vet simply to be certain the whole thing is fine. When my Golden Retriever had dogs no longer all of the dogs had opened their eyes after two weeks. All puppies and dogs are exclusive simply be a bit of extra sufferer and notice what occurs after three weeks.

check you local animal shelter, or humane society. also rescue groups. there are lots of puppy's out there needing homes.

DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!!

you might want to make sure its ok with the parents. you dont want to get him something living and then he wont be able to care for it. thats not fare for the dog.

Check with local animal shelters as well as rescues. You could get him the supplies i.e. bowls, leashes, gift cert. at vets office then let him pick out his new best friend so the match is as perfect as the intended gift!!
