I have a dog who is almost 2 yrs old and she is a pointer black lab mix and a couple other things. She is very energetic and in the house she is always pacing and walking around. We hook her up to the leash outside and she lays down. We bring her back int he acing and wlkaing around starts up again. When I walk her she acts liek a fool, walking around me and not heeling. She is the one running the show. I try ot giver her enough attention and I'm only 14 so training classes isn't really in my budget and my rents rn't for it. So does anyone have any tips? I can't really play fetch with her becasue off the leash she runs as fast as she can away... thats pretty fast if you know how fast pointers can run. Please help.... I feel I'm letting a great dog down!!!

When I go on runs with her she runs back and forth across the sidewalka nd i trip over her. I try to teach her obedience. I've had her for almost half a year , she doesn't even know sit. My parents like growl at her and say DARLA GO LAY DOWN and she'll put her tail in between he legs and go to her bed. She also knows "in cage" but other than that she is totally untrained. When we try she is so active and ADD liek. I try to get her energy out vbefore going to work with her but it doesnt seem to help.

There are no lakes or dog parks around me. Once again, I live on a military post. Limited space.... crammed quarters.. luckilyI live on an end unit and I have a wide area toplay with her but she is just too hyper.

I adopted darla from ADOPT A PET FOOUNDATION and she has been adopted and given back to the pound FIVE times, so giving her away is not an option. I still taker her on walks and my mom walks her around the gulf course every day and that is 5 miles! And like every other day I take her on a 2 mile jog so I can get fit for track. She just needs a little obedience but everyting doesnt seem to work... I bought her a harness but its like shes immuned to it!

You need to excercise her. She's an energetic dog and isn't meant to be indoors all the time. Take her to a dog park if you don't have a fenced in yard. She needs to be able to run!!

I am probably going to get a few thumbs down from this but I honestly think you should sell the dog or give her away. Pointers and Labs are VERY energetic dogs and need a LOT of exercise (at minimum 2 hours of running + play time) per day to stay happy. Pointers were bred for hunting and don't do well at house pets. You MUST exercise her EVERYDAY for hours otherwise you WILL let this poor girl down. You obviously didn't take her to training/obedience classes and that is a very important thing in order for her to learn. You don't walk her because she "acts like a fool"? That is a terrible excuse and is really mean. If you haven't taught her anything, how is she supposed to know how to act? If Darla is your dog, you should have thought about expenses like training. I really think you should give her away to someone who can provide Darla with proper training and give her enough exercise. It may be a hard decision but Darla is paying the price for many things that she is at no fault for.

You need to exercise her more, if she's walking back and forth in front of you on the path, she has too much leash and too much control, shorten the leash and don't allow her to do it. Hold it tight, hold her collar too if necessary.

She will fetch, that's good, you can buy a retractable lead for this purpose but they shouldn't be used for walking! Fetching can be good exercise but you will need to know how long the leash is and learn to throw the ball only that far, or do it in your back yard if you have one, off leash. The two breeds you know and mention are HIGH energy dogs so about 3 hours or more you have to exercise her a day, you know she's had enough when she comes in and lays down.

When you get a mixed breed dog, you need to look at what the parents are and what other breeds are involved, then find out their history to determine their energy levels, any dog originally used for hunting or herding is high energy. You can't just stick a dog (even a small one such as a Jack Russell is high energy) in the backyard and expect it not to have behavioural problems.

The more you walk her the better she will be. Be firm with her and praise her excessively when she is being good. Another thing that might help on walks is a harness. It might give you better control. If you could get to a library of book store, check out some training books. It is kind of self explanatory for training once you have read up on it. I am glad to know that some people care about training their dog, so good job! Like in anything, practice makes perfect! Good Luck!!!

Tying your dog in the back yard isn't exercise for the dog. It's boredom for the dog. Have you tried doing some basic training? Perhaps you could do some research and convince your parents that the dog will be a better family member with some training or try going to the library and seeing what books they have on dog training. Clicker training is a lot of fun actually.

It sounds like she needs exercise and something to do.

You wouldn't want to go sit in the back yard by yourself, right? Get out there and run around with her. It will be good for both of you.

When you have a dog, that dog thinks you are the best thing ever and you are her whole world.

You could try getting her a Gentle Leader lead. That will make her easier for you to handle when you take her for walks. They aren't too expensive and they work well.

My husband has been in the ARMY 22 years, and we have never lived on a post without a dog park. Contact MWR or ACS, and ask for one to be built on post because of leash law. Otherwise go out to the country and find a field or wooded area. I do it all the time. Ask your dad or mom to drive you or walk there w/dog. Also, I love to roller blade w/my dog on leash running beside me!!! Contact me on my 360, if you need more info about mwr. If you roller blade w/her n leash you will be going fast, so she will not have time to zig and zag around you, she will be trying to keep up with you.

My dog acts this way every time we walk him (and that's every single day!!), he acts like he never gets walked and pouts like crazy when I go to work. They just need long walks (he settles down if it's a fairly long walk and just enjoys himself) and lots of play time whenever you can. At the age of 2 they are still young and energetic, so try to throw a ball teach her fetch. Use treats to teach her tricks and keep doing it until she understands (find articles online for teaching techniques). She'll really be loyal to you when she's older and you'll appreciate her so much more.

take her running on a leash, walking anything that is interactive with you. read training books on your own and teach her yourself. Labs and pointers are smart dogs, they just need daily exercise and positive reinforcement.. you should be fine if you walk or run her at least twice a day. if not, once is better that non, and putting her on a leash tide up outside is not doing her any good, she needs u to be with her having fun..
