The upright pentagram represents Man in the world: The four elements, fire, water, air, earth, and Spirit at the center. It is used for protection and banishing. It is used for the light.
The inverted pentagram represents the left-hand path, the path of the goat (possibly Pan). The bottom most point is the chin, the next opposing two are the ears and the top most two are the horns. It is used for the dark forces.
In a double pentagram, an upright (single point up) pentagram covers an inverted pentagram (single point down). It represents the duality of nature, the darkness and the light forever changing from one to the other. Wholeness encompasses the duality of life and creates balance. It can also represent the energy of the Sun. It is used for the Powers of Light.
In Christianity the ten pointed star represents the ten disciples who neither betrayed nor denied Jesus.

There are two specific pentagrams: Point up, which is considered "good," and point down, a symbol of "Satan" (LaVeyan Satanists use it too, which, IMO, serves only to further to confuse the masses about LaVeyan vs. Theistic Satanism). Anyway, in Wicca (and the various fluff "religions" that sprung up around it), the pentagram symbolizes the Five Elements of Wiccan Ceremonial Magic: Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Ether/Spirit. In Christianity, it WAS used by Solomon as one of several symbols to invoke the protection of YHWH. Of course, now it's seen by fundamentalist Christians as "Satanic," but whatever. I bet they didn't realize one of their most prominent historical figures was one of the greatest sorcerors (yes, they DO exist) who ever lived. ^_^ It's used in various other cultures throughout the world, and going into all of those would take more time than I have. Those are the three main uses, however, so hopefully that should be enough.

The original & still sustained pentagram--a 5-pointed star encircled--represents the circle of life here & the elements that create that life (air, water, fire, earth, & spirit).
