Chicago wildlife authorities are planning on training people to hunt out goose nests and destroy goslings by shaking the eggs to crush the embryos or coating the eggs in oil to suffocate the gosling. If you are upset by this and live in Chicago, PLEASE DO SOMETHING!

I understand the need for population control. But wouldn't it be more humane to just take the eggs and let them grow cold? I meant to put this in my original question and forgot.

Have any of you people actually imagined what the embryo goes through during this so called humane procedure? Imagine resting peacefully inside your environment, then all of a sudden you are viciously thrown against the walls of your egg, breaking your bones, crushing your skull and scrambling your brain. I find this VERY disturbing and I hope no one volunteers for this mission.

This is the most humane way of controlling the population - a lot better than reaching for a shotgun.

PS the reputation that geese have for being vicious is wholly undeserved. I work at a city farm and there are two geese that wander around the farmyard. Even with the large numbers of toddlers that are running around, there has never been a problem.

There is a serious problem with overpopulation of geese. "Addling" the eggs is a way to keep the population down without killing adult geese. Overpopulation is not good for the geese. They get sick, starve and also badly effect other water birds. Isnt it better to do what they are doing than have disease and starvation?

you must not understand wildlife management...Ill tell you what.until you come up with a better solution,we will send all of them over to your place to hatch, and grow, and you can raise them as your own,but YOU are responsible for them, any damages they do ..YOU are resposible for any and all damages...wildlife managment is something that has to happen if humans and animals are to co-exist...if you take 5 gallons of water and dump it into a 1 gallon container...where do the other 4 go? the overflow can and usually does cause damage and something has to be done about it,in this case, you get the decision that is made. geese,ducks,deer,etc..it is just a way of life.,sorry to say,but it HAS TO BE DONE.

Geese are nasty obnoxious creatures. City geese are the worst and need to be controlled. Better they die in the egg than of disease or starvation due to overpopulation.

It needs to be done, the seagulls too. The Chicago city birds are terrible.
