I refuse to leave my small dog behind on a trip from PA to Florida for a month. I don't want to leave him boarded because he feels trapped. We are traveling by car and staying in a home in Florida. I want my little dog to have a positive experience but, I want my husband and I to enjoy ourselves also.

Not unlike a child take:
Lots of his "stuff" toys, his bed, his own bowl, his blanket
stuff that is his and he likes and will soothe him if he gets concerned or upset about new territory.
Take "his" brand of food with...don't stress him out by changing his food as well if at all possible.
Make sure you are around him 99% of the time, in the house etc.
Never let him off leash outdoors---so many people have lost pets this way.
Lots of peepee breaks, and stretch time.
Is he crate trained?? this could make it very easy to travel with.
Seat belts are recommended for your pups safety when travelling.
Some people will "drug" there dogs with Bendryl or a Gravol like medicine....I don't believe this to be necessary unless he is prone to carsickness.
Oh and one last thing I've even heard of people taking out insurance for their dog in case the end up in hospital or the vets.

Like I said before I always think like they are a small child
and think what would I pack for them.

Happy Trails and Good Luck!!!

note**** 2 thumbs up for Rescue Remedy works wonderfully!!!

that is really far for a dog to travel ! but there is pills, in petstores or from your vet. that can keep the dog from gettin car sick and asleep for sometime. i have not had 2 try them for i havent traveld out of state w my dog. i keep my dog comfortable by having his own seat and rubbin him he usually sleeps or chews a toy. If u havent traveld with him he might get car sick so keep a bag near by. take him on a long run before hand to tire him out. other then sickness your dog should love the wind in his face. remember to take some pit stops

Hi there,i travel with my dogs a lot and they are energetic souls.i recommend taking them for a walk before you go and investing in' Rescue Remedy.'This is a homeopathic medicine that wont harm you or your pet,you cannot overdose. I give my dogs 4 to six drops as they get in the car and it helps with anxiety, car sickness, and nervous tension. You can get it at health food shops. It is safe for adults, children and pets.

Your dog will be find. I have a Yorkie that I take everywhere with me. She has drove to Florida with us on several occasions. She is used to riding and does not get sick. When we stop we take her on walks and let her go to the bathroom. I also carry her food, treats, and blanket with us, just like if she was at home.

We always put the seats down to give our dogs plenty of space to lie down and move around. They mostly kept quiet and lay down for the trip (an 8-hour journey), but we'd still stop half way to walk and water them. We didn't feed ours in case of car sickness; in fact, we had to give one of them Drammamine or else he'd throw up. Although they kept quiet and lay down for most of the journey, I made sure I petted and talked to them to reassure them that everything was OK.

You will definitely need to stop to exercise, water and probably feed your dog. If your dog gets carsick or nervous about being in cars, car sickness medication helps (ask your vet about giving it to him if he's that small--my dog weighs as much as a small child, so it was safe for him to take). Pay attention to your dog and reassure him. Hopefully, he'll curl up and sleep most of the journey away.

Good luck!

when your in a car put ur dog on a cage so it doesn't break anything in your car and also bring his favorite toys so he could play with it and bring a leash in case he gets lost and one more thing food
