This is a legitimate question so no wisecracks please. Someone mentioned this in another question, that she was served real meat instead of a soy-based one. How do you -- as devout vegetarians or vegans -- react to something like this from a moral standpoint? Do you feel guilt, or do you try to rid your body of the impurities? I'd also like to hear from anyone forced to eat meat, as in a prison or hospital situation, against their will.

Eating meat "once in a while" is NOT being vegetarian. Vegetarians don't eat meat, period.
We call those wannabes "half-assitarians".

That person who was served real meat - personally, that's quite offensive. She could've either not paid or taken legal action or something.

But...True...It's not about ridding yourself of impurities. It's about reducing the suffering of animals. It's not wrong to eat animals, what's wrong is the way they are treated. The only way to have a bigger impact in reducing their suffering is by not eating them.

It's not a religious thing - so no worries. Unless of course in the case of Hinduism or something, I don't know what the "punishment" would be.

If I eat meat accidently? Well that is hard to do- because I have chewed meat accidently and therefor realised and not swallowed it. The reason I chewed it is because it was in my supposed vegetarian sandwich that I had ordered from a cafe- i got very angry with the staff and got a refund- what more can one do really within legal reason. I guess if suing was possible I would consider that.
As far as eating soy-based meat... I don't get why vegetarians do that. They make lots of them to resemble meat in appearance as well as somewhat in taste? Um where is the logic there (given if a person is vegetarian in the basis that eating meat is immoral and that eating meat is repulsive)?
And no I didn't feel guilt at the cafe- just anger and disgust at everyone responsible for the mistake.

I was not forced to eat meat and other animal products but they encouraged it at a facility known as "new hampshire hospital" and "vermont state hospital".

I was syringed out with "unknowns" I was told that perhaps there was ANIMAL PRODUCTS in a pill or syringe I really do not know.
I was not aware at the time to really think that they would put ANIMAL PRODUCTS into pills and so when they threatened me by saying they were going to INJECT ME DAILY with the "HEAVY(hell raiser) PAIN CAUSING SYRINGE" if I did not eat PILLS well I chose to eat the pills in that specific scenario. If I had known about and been anymore of an AWAKENED VEGAN at the time I would have made a motion against the pills based upon the notion that they contained animal products and if I was any further awakened as I am now I woudl have made motion to not consume pills based on teh ANIMAL TESTING SCENARIO.

I wouldn't accidently eat it, because I prepare all of my own food. I dont trust others to. When I was hospitalized a while back, I ordered steamed plain rice and salad, to be sure I didnt get any source of meat. In any situation, meat is rarely served alone, and usually has a couple of side dishes. Eat the side dishes, and leave the rest alone. No one can FORCE anyone to eat anything they dont choose to, even a parent. You cant make someone open up their mouth and chew something they dont want. Ever try to get a child to try a brussel sprout-its not going to happen, in most cases

Basically as long as it was not intentional, you just don't let it happen again. Some people may feel bad, or sick but that's about it.

"I'd also like to hear from anyone forced to eat meat, as in a prison or hospital situation, against their will."

- Normally the system is surprisingly accommodating. if not (as in a prison setting) a little hunger strike will do the trick. (So I hear, I've never been in jail myself.)

I can only speak for myself. I have been vegan for about 8 years and vegetarian for 6ish before that. If I accidentally eat something with eggs in it...my nerves are shot. Not because of guilt but literally a physical response. When I first went vegetarian if I cheated the toxins and Adrenalin in the meat use to give me rashes under my breasts and arms too. ( I say toxins because I have read that meat takes so long to digest in a human body it actually begins to rot before we...pass it.)
Iam not a doctor Iam just speaking from experince.
On a completely emotional level. Yeah it breaks me down. I have read so many horrible things about animals raised for food. Their lives, their deaths...no thanks not for me. It makes me feel really guilty. Iam not ashamed to say I cry about it.

If I ate something and later found out it had some sort of meat-product or egg, I would be a bit bummed, but I would get over it with the knowledge of what not to eat in the future.

If someone intentionally fed me dead animal knowing I didn't eat it, I would be very upset. I would probably stop talking to them for having such a complete disrespect for me and my beliefs.

If they accidentally fed me dead animals, I am sure we would both be bummed out.

No penance.
Don't be sorry-- Be better.

I feel a momentary twinge of guilt - but what's done is done and you can't take it back. You didn't do it intentionaly, so all you can do is promise yourself to be more careful in the future.
A close family member (also vegetarian) was force-fed meat in a hospital. I was really pissed off about that.

This happened to me the other day.. I was working on an art mural at school and then pizza was ordered.. I was really hungry and it was pepperoni pizza. I picked all of the pepperoni's off but it was all under the cheese which made it a daunting task and I felt pretty stupid doing it because everyone was watching me.. And one of them blended in with the sauce and I accidentally took a little bite. I felt a bit guilty but.. What can I really do? It isn't the end of the world, and it's not like I did it on purpose. I can't dwell on things like that or I will go crazy.

Vegetarianism is not all about personal purity, it's about reducing the need for so many animals to be 'processed' in the way that they are. Accidentally (or even purposefully) eating meat once in a while is not such a big deal.
