he has never done any exercise and now he wants to lose at least two stone. he wants to buy a bike and ride to work but the thing is, I think its too far a journey for him to ride since he's not been very active. do you think this will do him more harm than good? hes 37yrs old and around 15 1/2stone? He doesnt smoke or drink.

I don't speak "stone" so I have no idea how to know how fit he is.

Cycling is a good workout and it's fairly easy on your heart (and it's a good way to get fit). Have him ride shorter distances first until he's sure he can handle the longer ride to work. The fact that he doesn't smoke is a good sign he can at least work up to the distance.

I'm in roughly the same situation - 37, non-smoker, non-drinker. I've been walking, swimming and riding an exercise bike to try to get in shape.

I do not like riding bikes. Too many cars on the roads today. And if he has never ridden a bike, the first day will probably be the LAST day! What happens when it rains?

Have him get a stationary bike for in the house.
Or do The Step
Or do Jumping Jacks

All of these will give him the aerobics he needs to slowly get into shape.

Don't hold him back.

When he gets the bike. Hopefully he will ride around the neighborhood until he is able to go the distance to his work place, then ride to work.

Best of luck.

Tell the man to get a stationary bike for use inside your home. Biking to work is not a good idea for him.

exercise at home and eating healthy is good....less portions would also help...buy a exercising bike for your home and he can use that instead of riding to work ...when you never have done exercises you won't be able to do it to your destination
