Condoms only offer slight, if youre lucky, protection against herpes and hpv.

Regarding hiv transmission, the american CDC say condoms do not let the hiv through and virtually eliminate the risk.

While the FDA says, condoms often leak , "Leakage of HIV-sized particles through latex condoms was detectable (P less than 0.03) for as many as 29 of the 89 condoms tested.", and only reduce risk by a factor of 10 .

I wasnt convinced by the CDC's rebuttals.

ADD:
I completely agree with Seeker below me, still wear a condom to reduce the risk. Condoms do reduce the risk, the question is by how much. Different credible studies report different stats.Thats what my main point was.

If a person really must have sex, then some protection is better than none.

If you're going to have sex anyway (let's be real), then condom use is mandatory. They reduce the odds of you contracting an STD drastically and pregnancy to around .5%.

To clarify the latter, if you have sex 100 times (doing the math, twice a day, every day for 50 days (or 7 weeks)), one of those times, you have a 50% chance of getting pregnant.

If you use birth control (a patch or spermicide or the ring or diaphragm or the pill), those odds drop even further.

For STDs, risks are reduced, but you also need to talk with your partner to see if they've been exposed to things in the past. If they have cold sores or a rash "down there," I'd recommend staying away...some STDs can "jump skin" from groin to groin if one person is infected.

Be careful, be open and talk, and use a condom. Just because the folks here are throwing out stats, don't assume that it's not worth the bother.

I got identified with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about 3 years back, whilst I was still attending college and had a dumb one-night stand. I understand loads of young women say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a huge mistake that one time and suddenly it seemed like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date other men again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores round her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/Oc603 everything changed.

Not only was I able to eradicate all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This system provided the opportunity to be happy and experience real love again. Now I want to help others by sharing this story.

If they are used correctly and consistantly they are safe and you have nothing to worry about.
