Don't worry too much, just give him the antibiotics as directed. Pay attention to his breathing if it sounds like he is really struggling to breath take him back to the doctor. It should clear up before he is done with his antibiotics. But be sure to finish all of his doses. the Vicks vaporub for babies might help him breath easier also.
you really cant prevent infections like this, but foods with vitamin c will help his immunity and help him get over colds and infections faster.

Keep up with the antibiotics. If there was something to worry about, I think the doctor would want to keep him. My 9 month old has a double ear infection for the second time and I kept her inside and her doctor says that sometimes things just happen for no reason even if you try to prevent it from happening and a 7 day treatment means that it's not serious enouth to keep him in the hospital. If you follow the doctor's orders then you have nothing to worry about. Just take it into comfort that he wasn't born with a hole in his back like my baby girl. I am still waiting for her test results to tell me whether of not she'll need back surgery.
