The last surprise party I threw, I just did a lot of finger foods: wings, mozzarella sticks, chips, salsa, pretzels, sliced sausages, veggie and fruit platters, etc. And LOTS of drinks.

For most parties, its good enough just to put some music on and let people mingle. If you want some planned activities, you can play some games like charades, Taboo, Gestures, Catchphrase, etc.

If your place is large enough, it may be easiest to have it there, or at another friend's place. You may also want to reserve a party/private room at a local restaurant, that way you won't have to deal w/food. If it's warm, you could do a BBQ in a local park. Or you can rent a hall if you're looking for something more formal.

It may be easier if you have a theme in mind, like girls night out, then u can do it at a club or bar, or have like a slumber party. Or if they're into a sport, you could do it outside w/a big game or tournament set up. Dessert night would be cute, and that will simplify the menu. Just think of what your friend is into and run with that.

Regardless of what you do, I'm sure your friend will appreciate your thought and consideration. Good luck!!

If you are having it at your house there are tons of things you can set up for fun. I don't know how old you are but here are some things I think would be fun for anyone 21-35.

Set up a bar at the door. Assign one person to be the bartender and make a cocktail that is different and unique. Pomegranite martini's are a good idea.
Have a video camera to pass around so the birthday girl can get little messages from everyone at the party.
Have the birthday girl's favorite movie playing repeatedly on a low volume on your tv. You can also make a guest book where people can write birthday wishes to your friend.
Get a few fun adult games like Cranium or popular movie/tv triva games.
Play charades (this is always fun- especially when people have been drinking)
You could even hang some butcher paper on the wall and have everyone write a birthday message to your friend on there. You can make it a theme- Three things the birthday girl should do this upcoming year. Everyone will enjoy reading what others wrote and will talk about it.
By the time everyone has been served food, presents have been opened, cake has been cut, and everyone has written or said something to the birthday girl- it will be time for most people to start heading home.
You can also offer "prizes" to those who help clean up.

A great bit of fun would be to set up a video camera in an area that is out of the way. Video tape your friend coming through the door and then play it later for everyone. You might want to play a murder mystery game. They are a real hoot. People like to do something other than just sit and do nothing. Fondues are always a fun food thing. Good luck
