I think that's a fine idea, but it can get tricky. If you don't have a system to update what everyone has purchased for you, you may get a lot of duplicates, and a lot of headaches. I suggest you set up a registry at some place like, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, Wal-Mart, or Sears, where they'll carry a lot of things you'll need for college life. That way, you can pick out exactly what you want/need, and people don't have to worry about figuring out what you want, and you won't get duplicates. And I'm sure there'll still be a lot of cash gifts too. Congratulations and good luck!

This is an assumption on your part that everyone is going to give you a gift. Some people may only give you a card...say if they aren't going to attend your party. It is always in poor taste to TELL people what you want. If they ask, then that is something different thing. Don't do it.

Are you wanting to do the things you "need", like things you want? Or things that you need for the party like paper plates, cups, etc?

if it is things you "want", I would not because people usually give money.

If it is paper plates, etc, then maybe put something on the invite saying "everyone bring a dish" or something? Maybe when they RSVP you can ask them to bring stuff instead of put it on the invite.
