Well, a shrimp is a sentient being. If you believe in Animal Rights, then you believe that all animals have the right to live without being used as a resource. Where do you draw the line? The line must be drawn at sentience. Using any other characteristic involves making a subjective judgment as to what characteristics are superior to others. This subjective judgment which will invariably be slanted towards those with characteristics similar to yours.
This is called Speciesism. It's the same mental processes that lead to racism and sexism. You choose characteristics similar to yours and say that anyone that lacks those characteristics has less value than you do.
The very premise of Animal Rights is that all sentient beings have the right to live without being used as a resource. The only way to accomplish this is by making a commitment to abolish animal use and abuse in your own life, i.e. to live vegan.
It is not possible to believe in Animal Rights without veganism being your moral baseline. It is a contradiction in terms. You cannot support the abolition of animal use while simultaneously using animals.

I dont mean to sound rude but if you are a vegan who eats shrimp, you are not a vegan. You are a pectarian.
Not trying to be the vegan police or anything, but a vegan is a person who does not consume any animal products in anyway. This includes not eating meat, fish meat, eggs, cheese, cream, milk, honey and also not wearing wool, leather and not using makeup that contains any animal products, or using toothpaste that contains ground animal bones (some do) or burning candles made from beeswax etc.
If you want to be vegetarian, pectarian or vegan, that's great! But dont label yourself with 'vegan' if you're not a vegan.
I hope I havent offended you! I'm really pleased you've thought about animal rights in the first place! Go you! :)

If you don't eat any other seafood then how is a shrimp different? If you do then it's probably fine, but technically you can't label yourself as a vegan. It's your choice as to what you want to do. Also to the person you is concerned about the "shrimpies mommies and daddies" and "facing emotional stress" You have been watching to much Finding Nemo. Shrimp are not like human beings they do not have "emotional stress" Shrimp do not experience emotions like sadness, loneliness, or happiness. I personally think that you can be a vegetarian and eat seafood just not a vegan. Remember you don't need anyone telling you what to do. You just need the facts and then you can make your choices. Good Luck!

Really, who cares whether or whether not you can label yourself a vegan. Choose a diet best for you, not what some wackos at Peta say you should.
Now, I think you'll find shrimps are pretty much equivalent to insects. Yes, they have a nervous system, but if I remember correctly no brain to speak of. They are certainly not conscious, and cannot actually 'feel' pain but just react to stimulus, much a computer reacts to the touch of a keyboard. Complex. yes, able to actually suffer? No.
I don't see how killing a shrimp is much worse than swatting a fly, etc, and I definately don't see any problem eating them.

A true vegan does not even eat eggs, I highly doubt they can eat shrimp. But, I love shrimp... good thing I am not a vegan.

I'm in Florida. They catch shrimp with nets. Why would you want to eat them if you're a vegan for animal rights reasons?
Sorry- to me that doesn't make sense.

I personally do not eat shrimp because they are scavengers. Meaning they are filter feeders who feed off other sea creatures crap.
Whether you stay away from animal products for 'animal rights' reasons, or health reasons, scavengers are nasty.

Shrimp is an animal protein and therefore not traditionally "allowed" on the Vegan diet. But you're a free person and can do as you please.
