Here's the deal- this is all depending on what the problem with your heart is. If you just have a simple irregularity such as atrial fib- you can be treated with medications or cardioversion. If you have severe damage or abnormalities with your heart, then you would be put on a list- Some get hearts right away- this is complicated as you have to be matched with the donor so that your body does not reject the new heart. Some wait a long time for their hearts.

I'd have to say, be put on a waiting list! That's pretty much up to the lord If it's your time, then it's your time. Not to be rude or using harsh words but a doctor just can't pull a heart out of his hat just like that! May God Bless, And I hope that this was just a question and not for real!?!?!

To add to these great answers, the cardiac surgeon will try surgery, but if you're in heart failure you'll be put on the list. He/She can also implant a VAD (ventricular assist device) or an artificial heart if your condition gets worse before you can get a heart. VADs can be used as a bridge to transplant or as destination therapy (prolongs your life as long as possible). Artificial hearts are rarely used, and are mostly experimental. Where you are placed on the list depends on the severity of your heart disease, but actually receiving a donor heart depends on finding a match, location, and age (pediatrics vs. adult). In my personal experience, new hearts are usually received from donors in the area. We have never flown cross-country to deliver hearts like on tv.

Depending on the irregularity, medication or cardioversion can be used to correct it. There are many people that have irregular heartbeats ie: heartblocks and do just fine. The heart is an amazing muscle and depending on the situation there are many ways to correct or live with abnormalities.

They would do a surgical implant of a pace maker which would regulate the heart rate.
