I am type 1 and I eat almost whatever I want [I have the insulin pump]. I know the diet I'm supposed to follow would be better for me but is it ok to eat what I want as long as I keep my BG in control?? I am only 19 and I crave carbs. Ugh. Please help! I feel sooo guilty eating them. Lol.

I know from life experiance that eating what you want when you want is a killer for diabetics. My mother had diabetes and was insulin dependant due to her not taking care of herself as the doctor suggested she lost a limb and her life. So please consider what you are doing while puting things into your mouth. The diet that was told to my family was no sugar ,1 slice of bread a day perferably toasted , no fried or fatty foods, baked, broiled, grilled and boiled meat and veggies is the best foods to eat with limits on meat and starches. The starches turn into sugar after they have been digested. Some starches are rice, noodles, potatoes, popcorn and gravy. Drink plenty of water and less soda. No more than a glass of milk a day [milk has sugar in it] and keep some orange juice around for when your sugar goes to low. Also for a quick fix when someone is not responsive from low blood sugar a teaspoon of sugar can be put in side of jaw to raise sugar up enough to see them to the hospital. This is a very serious desease so do not be so flambouyant about it,. My father also has it and has had strokes and heart problems. After 40 years with diabetes and him not caring for hisself the pancreas is gone and nothing is now helping him. He is on borrowed time. May God Bless You!!!

Diabetics eat normal food, go to American diabetes association website it is a great place to get info on what you can eat.

To address some previous posts, hospitals do not give you a special diet adhering to your needs, when you are in there they give you just about the same thing anyone else eats, if anything they cut back on fats, but not really sugar, maybe the sugar free jello or diet soda. Sugar is not off limits. It can be eaten and it is impossible to totally avoid, but in small amounts. The website i previously mentioned gives a good plan for this. White bread is bad, whole wheat is good, white rice is bad, a darker wild rice not so bad. Read the labels see how many carbs everything you eat has in it. And yes it is OK to eat what you want if you keep your bg in control, but do not load up on fatty empty calories. I have been a type 1 for thirty years and consider yourself a little lucky because the insulin and monitoring procedures are much better now than they were 30 yrs ago.

You wanna make yourself feel better go to yahoo groups and find the diabetes group, many people there who have some of your same problems, matter of fact some of them are really screwed up.

I always like to think T1s can get away with a little more because they can adjust their insulin to each meal.

Some people are extremely strict. People are taught different things on diagnosis. And learn different things over the years...

I eat what I like. I've suffered complications, but that's due to not taking insulin, not my diet. I don't eat junk 24/7, but I'm definately no angel. I try and keep away from things that make me sick. For example, if I have some normal soft drink, I'm usually okay, but if I drink Coke, I'll be sick for the next three days.

I don't want to say that the people who've answered before me are wrong, but I will say I've spent a lot of time in hospital on a hospital's diabetic diet. During those visits, I have had NO restrictions on bread, milk and starches. In fact, in hospital, I have been given some things that I normally would not eat at home. And before EVERY meal they ask if I have diabetes, so there is no chance of me getting the wrong food.

Most guides will tell you to aim for around 150g carbs a day. Diabetes is very serious, but hell, you have to die of something. Just be sensible and don't let diabetes control every aspect of your life.

honestly i dont really believe in the diabetic diet for type 1's...i think that diet is more for type 2's(just my opinion) my diet really hasnt changed since i was diagnosed with type 1 (i was diagnosed at 15 and i'll be 19 in 4 months)i just kind of watch my portions...i dont go eat a sh*t load of pasta (nobody should diabetic or not) or something else thats loaded with carbs all the time...every once in a while ill eat 8 or 9 carbs worth of pasta and thats only about twice a month(and no I'm not overweight!)
