From food service providers like Sysco. It's almost all pre-made, packed in giant bags and reheated once in the school kitchen. The meat is one grade above pet food grade.

Generally from places like Sysco like the other gal said. Mass-produced institutional food is made, quick-frozen, and sent around the country to subscribing school districts.
There was a really interesting article in a recent New Yorker about a master chef who got the job of improving San Francisco-area school lunches. She kept trying make the food healthier for the kids, like with goat-cheese pizzas with fresh veggie toppings, but the kids totally rejected it, lol. Little morons...

My school goes to local restaurants. The nearby Italian restaurant provides two types of pasta, a pizza place serves three types of pizza, a fast-food place serves chicken strips with fries, and a sandwich shop offers two types of sandwiches. Unfortunately, the selections are always the same. How boring!

It depends--sometimes the school has it's own cafeteria that makes the food..other times, schools get food that is catered from different restuarants and markets--they get special deals, etc...
