I agree whole heartedly with many of the previous posters. Your daughter will not remember such an occasion. As long as she has visual stimulation and love, she will be happy. A cake, some family and other young children is all you need. Some balloons, and a few gifts. Anything else is questionable. Someday she'll look at those pictures and the simple sweetness of the party I just described will make a much better memory (since she will have no memory of this party) than photos of the luau you threw to impress (even if you are not aware of this) the other parents. Have a low key, family based 1st birthday for her, and then get a babysitter and plan the luau for the adults! You deserve it and it will be much better for everyone involved (including your daughter). Wait until she is six or seven to throw a huge themed party, when she can appreciate it and will probably beg for it. Save up the money now so you can rent an elephant or something then. Better yet....start a college fund with the money...she will surely appreciate this when she is 18 and struggling with money. Check the news...college is costing more and more each year.

What kind of party did she ask for? Has she expressed an interest in Hawaian themes? Hawaian foods? Hawaii?

Who exactly are you having this party for? I can almost guarantee your daughter will sleep through most of it. When she is awake, she will not be happy with a crowd of people disrupting her day. The question you really need to be asking is, "who really cares that my daughter is turning one?" I don't mean to be cruel but until your little girl is actually telling you what she would like her party to be like, she will not be ready for a big theme party. Or a party of any type. Have the grandparents over for dinner put a candle in a cupcake for the baby and get a separate cake for the grown-ups. Keep it simple! Loving aunts and uncles and special friends won't love her any less if they don't spend a couple birthdays with her.

Bank the money you didn't spend on the theme party and give your daughter an education when she is ready.

It is so smart of you to plan a party that everyone can enjoy, not just the 1 year old birthday girl. How many BORING parties have I sat through because more thought was put into what the 1 toddler wanted than the 20 other adults in attendance would enjoy? Babies that age will have fun in a crowd no matter what. The luau is a great idea! Buy a big pork loin (7 pounds or so) and bake it in pineapple juice. Serve with lots of polynesian fixins-even some hot pineapple on the grill? Don't forget your grass skirts and leis!

Having a Luau for a one year old sounds like it's more for the parents than the kids, who it's really for!

How bout a "Care Bears Theme" or "Teletubbies" instead of a Luau! There are so many kiddie themes these days, you shouldn't have any trouble finding something!

In Hawaii we do makes large luaus for a child turning one. It is an important birthday for your child and you should go all out if your able to. The theme is easy enough and this is a great time of the year to have a luau. You should list in your invites its a Luau and possible mention for your guests to wear Hawaiian attire, you would be surprised how many people actually have an aloha print dress or an aloha shirt. Do the tropical looking plates etc.....and most party places have alot of Hawaiian type decor for rent. Either way I hope you have a great time celebrating your little ones birthday.

Plan a party that YOU want, because frankly a 1-year old kid is NOT going to know the difference nor remember it.

Kids don't typically start to appreciate parties and themes till they're about 3 or 4, when they start finding things that REALLY interest them (like Tela-Tubbies, or Power Rangers, or whatever).

So have a fun time, but don't stress it with regard to a theme...you'll be the only one who really cares. Believe me.

Your daughter is turning ONE. Why are you doing a big theme party? She doesn't care, doesn't know what a luau is, and only cares about sticking her hands inside her birthday cake. Constant giant birthday parties for children are ridiculous, frivolous and ostentatious.

Go to a party store and look for Hawaiian stuff. You can get all sorts of cute stuff see if they have Lilo & stich stuff. You could do an Elvis Blue hawaii theme
Get pineapples & coconuts at the market make virgin Pina coloda's make a ham put pineapple rings on it. Take a grass skirt and trim it for your daughter. Look for Hawiian music. Like one post said she won't remember the party so just have fun.

I agree. If you want to make a good theme, try Tellie Tubbies or The Wiggles. A luau is a good idea, but at one year old, I don't think your daughter will really be able to appreciate it. You want to make sure she will enjoy it too. Good luck!

I wouldn't get too crazy with a party for a 1 year old. Why not save that $ and have a big party that she'll remember like her 5th bday. You'll then have a better idea of what theme to go with.
