An infection or even just a cold can be the trigger to diabetes.
My daughter was dxed at age 2.She is now 17 and doing well.
Get to a new doctor and have your child tested.
Do you have friends or family members who could do just a finger stick for him?
It's not the proper way to dx but it may be a start.
Good luck. Keep us updated.

I'm so sorry that your son is having so much difficulty, and it must be extremely hard on you not knowing what exactly is going on with him. My father actually has Type I diabetes which used to be referred to as juvenile diabetes (but even adults albeit rare can get type I as children can get type II, 'adult-onset' diabetes, if overweight) and was diagnosed at the age of 17. He sees an endocrinologist (a dr. who specializes in metabolic disorders including diabetes) and because of his age and him being brittle (blood sugar going high and low easily/too low more so), he uses an insulin pump while still checking his blood sugar about 4x a day per his dr. He had attended a support group for those with diabetes, and there may be a group close to your locale.

I don't know if that is occuring with your son and if he has diabetes, but please do Not delay getting a diagnosis from a doctor that will listen and take his symptoms seriously. No one should have to wait until the symptoms are serious enough to warrant the emergency room. I'll post a website for the American Diabetes Association if you do find out that after testing which typically includes a blood test and urinalysis that he does have diabetes. Wishing you and your baby wellness!

My daughter was 9 years old when she was diagnosed and is now 18 years old. If your doctor refuses to test your son for diabetes or anything else you ask him/her to do, it's time for a new doctor. If you cannot find a friend with a glucometer to test the blood sugar yourself, you can buy one at Walgreens. I would take him to another doctor.

My daughter was very thirsty and hungry all the time. She had to urinate very frequently. She lost a lot of weight (she only weighed 44 lb at the time she was diagnosed) and we found out right after a bout with the flu. I've heard of it coming on very quickly and I've heard of it taking awhile. Go to the American Diabetes Association website and read up on the "honeymoon period" of Type 1 diabetes. It's basically where the pancreas is still making small amounts insulin. It doesn't make enough to do the job but sometimes it makes enough that the patient will not get deathly ill for weeks or even months.

Another thing you can check for is to smell his breath. It sounds weird, but if his blood sugar is really high for a long time his breath will smell kind of fruity. You can also buy KetoStrips at Walgreens. It's a urine stick test. Just let one his diapers get pretty wet and when you change him put the ketostrip between two folds of the diaper and press for a few seconds. There is a guide on the bottle that will tell you if there are ketones in his urine. Ketones are bad! If it turns pink get him to a doctor. If it's dark red get him to the ER immediately.

TAKE HIM TO A DOCTOR WHO WILL LISTEN TO YOU!

Good Luck and God Bless.

I can't believe the doctor refused to test him. I would get a second opinion. Even babies can get diabetes. When I was diagnosed at 12 after an infection there was also a 5 year old at the hospital who was just diagnosed w/ diabetes also. Here is some information you may find useful:

I hope he is ok and good luck.

Go to a different Dr. I was 3 when I got Type 1 Diabetes. Or find someone you know with a meter and test his blood sugar yourself. His blood sugar should be between 80 to 120.

Get a second opinion.

For many years doctors believed that a baby could not be born with diabetes. Until one was. It is rare, but not impossible.
