Over the past few weeks I have been feeling unwell. Very tired, sore legs, dry mouth at night, and feel thirsty all the time. As my father was diabetic I am wondering could I also get it. I am 44, not over weight and very active.

it would be worth going to the doctor for a blood test, you don't necessarily have to be overweight to be diabetic, get the blood test then if you do have it you can get it sorted, good luck

Hi,
sometimes when our parents have a condition we automatically assume we are likely to get it. My mum is diabetic and I used to think that, i have been tested twice and I am fine. There could be a number of reasons for those symptoms, you maybe just run down...and dehydrated..so don't worry too much. Symptoms of diabetes can also include loosing weight, even without diet change, frequent running to the toilet, extreme tiredness, very thirsty etc. I am someone who is always thirsty and runs to the toilet but it doesn't mean i am diabetic. It's good that you are a good weight and active, howeer even the thinnest people can be diabetic..and it's a common misconception that only overweight people get it or that overweight people basically give themselves diabetes as it's not like that or always that way at least.

I think if it's something that you are concerned about that you should pop into your gp just to make sure everything is ok and maybe put your mind at rest, it's a simple "finger prick" test really. I am sure it's nothing to worry about but obviously it's probably better to be on the safe side!

Best of luck! x

It is hereditary, and because of your age, it sounds like Type 2 diabetes. This can be controlled by exercise, diet and insulin.
You will need a blood sugar test from your doctor or any Lloyds chemist will do it for free, just walk in and ask.
The tiredness is a symptom along with increased thirst, blurred vision, and irritability.
It sounds that because you are so active, you have been controlling it. Get yourself tested and with advice on diet you will be fine.

It is not in any way possible for anyone, however clever, to say if you do or don't have diabetes. Your symptoms of course make it a possibility.

Go see your GP or practice nurse and arrange a fasted blood sugar check.

You don't have to be overweight to get diabetes, you should see your doctor immediately as diabetes is not something you should put off finding out if you have.

do you pee a lot? Do you have a friend with diabetes? If so ask him/her to check your level on their machine but your best bet is go see a professional just to make sure
