I can cook for vegetarians and vegans, the people who freak me out are those who eat meat, as long as it doesn't look like a bit of an animal. What's that about? Same dish, (osso bucco) first time, she wouldn't eat it, she slipped her meat onto my son's plate. Second time (with malice afrorethought, same dish, but I took the meat off the bone and presented it as a stew. No problem!

To Beeb, I am a writer. The bit about Osso bucco was just an example. A Hindu colleague would eat chicken as long as it didn't look like a chicken leg etc. My sister-in-law would eat liver but had never cooked it. She didn't like to touch it. My question remains.

Sounds, like someone already said, a bit psychological. I know that even as a omni I couldn't stand seeing all of the carcasses in the meat aisle, and I swore that I would never cook meat.Maybe she feels guilty but doesn't want to make sacrifices ("don't ask, don't tell" kind of thing) or perhaps she just has a problem with the texture of meat. I, for example, won't eat peppers if I see them, so it could just be a thing where she knows what she doesn't like.It depends on the person, I guess.

Just curious, why are you posting this in the vegetarian/ vegan section? I guess it involves veg*ns, but I don't think I understood your question very well or something- sounds more like a statment or something that should be asked in some type of general food section.

I think perhaps some people like to be in denial about what they are eating. They like the taste of "meat" but do not want to face the fact that it is flesh--
When I was young and raised as a meat eater I gave it no thought where the meat came from. Suddenly I realized that "beef" was cut up dead cows' bodies, "ham" and 'bacon" were pigs, etc. I was really quite horrified. As I grew older and had to prepare it--- pulling the tendons out of chicken legs etc. I really got a bit nauseated.
The clincher for me was when I moved to California and sat in a freeway traffic jam behind a cattle truck headed to the slaughter house. The cows were so terrified and miserable--
I truly think everyone should be aware of how their food gets to their table... ALL our food-- vegetables, fruit, alike. Some people are very hard-hearted to other people and animals' suffering, but others will want to change their eating habits accordingly.

some people can't cut into meat, i used to be able to cut open a cow or chicken and prep it for cooking, i can't do it anymore, and when i was doing it before, i felt like a butcher, i never wanted to cut into dead flesh, but for some reason i was good at it and i keep getting promoted and i have to cut more and bigger things, freaking a

That's a little strange I agree. I think she's trying to act like a vegetarian but isn't really one. That's really strange.

Sounds like she needs to face up to reality... but, she probably isn't the only one in the human race in denial about something or other...

A hypocritical vegetarian, perhaps? a vegetarian wannabe? an omnivore with muscle tissue issues? or maybe she has pet shrimp at home.

She doesn't like to be reminded that her food came from the death of another animal.

I'm exactly the same. I enjoy meat but it must not rememble an animal, eg: prawns. Yuck!!
