Iodine is added to salt to prevent thyroid problems. People who fail to eat iodized salt often end up with an iodine lack that causes serious and painful thyroid gland swelling (endemic goiters) at the throat. Countries in Africa that traditionally did not use iodized salt have mandated it and improved public health there immensely.
Don't eat salt that is not iodized unless you are positive your body is already getting iodine. There is no taste difference but there is a big health difference and no cost difference. If you live in an area where there are low levels of iodine in the ground and you eat vegetables from those areas, you need that iodine through salt.

Iodized Salt means that the mineral Iodine has been added. It is a necessary nutrient that plays a big part in your bodies production of growth hormone. Use it as you would use regular salt.

If it isn't intended for human consumption it will say so on the bag and/or box. Rock salt for ice-cream making is labeled this way.
As another poster pointed out, it's probably Kosher salt. I love the stuff for cooking, and it's also good for pickling, since iodine will discolor the pickles.

You can eat it, just not as your only source of salt--actually, it's the iodine--"they" started adding iodine to salt many years ago as a way to get it into the diet of the general populous. It prevents goiders--seen as extremely enlarged throats. My grandma had one--they started adding iodine to salt before I was born, some 50 years ago--so there ya are.

If it's not rock salt, then it's probably kosher salt. Perfectly acceptable to use. In fact, I have a bowl of it on my stove for cooking. I like it better than table salt.

iodized salt is safe to eat. It is loaded with iodine and created to help fight iodine deficiancy in people. Iodine is not produced by the body and must be ingested.

it was probably kosher salt- which is really nice to use while cooking-- and distributes itself more evenly than table salt....
it isn't BAD to use...
but you should also use table salt for some things or eat pickles... or anything pre-salted like chips/crisps, crackers... you do need some iodine in your system but it isn't the end all be all.
