You can take some wet wipes with you to wipe public toilet seats. Some toilets have a spray installed for you to use with toilet paper to wipe the toilet seat before use. I remember reading something that it had been proved that it was unlikely that you would catch something from using a public toilet. If you wipe the toilet as suggested, this should make sure that you shouldn't catch anything and make you feel more confident in using public toilets. Mango suggests that you "hover" - it has been proved that this can cause problems as you can't always completely empty your bladder and could result in an uncomfortable UTI (urinary tract infection).

Ha Ha , this old chestnut. I would say that it would be rare to catch anything from toilet seats, but not impossible.
As for sitting on public toilets.......Ahhhhhhhhhhhh No.
People are disgusting at times and at their worst it seems when they use a toilet that they don't own.
If you are caught short and have no option other than to use a public facility......HOVER above the seat.

I asked my doctor last time I went in because I work in an office and was concerned about the same thing. She told me no, that no stds or other diseases could be transferred by a toilet seat. I still lay down toilet paper at work though, sometimes people aren't too neat you know! You can also buy these cute charmin toilet travel cover things if you're still paranoid about it. You have nothing to worry about though.

I've tried catching fruit flies while sitting on the toilet, but my reflexes weren't quick enough. Once a mouse ran by my feet, and I couldn't catch it while sitting, so I got up and chased it, but didn't get 3 steps before I tripped over my pants, and hit my head on the toilet paper holder, and passed out. Then many students heard the commotion and ran in the washroom to see what had happened, and took pictures and I ended up on the frontpage of the school newsletter in all my glory. As a precautionary note always make sure you wear a helmut when you have to go. Hope this helps.

Yes you can.Crabs being just one thing. Just try to wipe the seat before you sit down. I have a 2yr old, and I always carry Milton sterilising wipes with me, you could also use an antibacterial wipe(ie flash, cif, etc)
