A canker sore can be either a type of herpes virus,
or it can be what is known as an apthous ulcer.
An apthous ulcer is a painful, shallow sore on the mucus membrane of the mouth or tongue and it is not known what the cause of this is. It is felt to possibly due to allergic, immunologic, or stress related issues. It can also be related to a disease called Bechet's disease. A single canker sore is most probably an apthous ulcer.
The other possibility is that it is a herpetic sore. This is caused by the NON sexual type of herpes that people often get when they are kids and then the cold sores come on every now and again for the rest of their lives.
You can tell the difference between a herpetic cold sore and a apthous canker sore by this: Did you have an odd tingly nerve sensation a day or two before the sore broke out? Is it more on the lips? If it is more on the lips and it was very tingly, it is more likely herpes. Try some over the counter remedies. If it is herpetic, don't share eating utensils until it goes away.

Not necessarily. Herpes is caused by the Papillae virus. It is commonly transmitted during the sexual act, although it can be transmitted by other means. Herpes does not go away, it can be dormant for a long time and all of a sudden it will resurface. A regular canker sore can be cured and it will not return.

No, a canker sore is inside the mouth and not caused by herpes virus. Fever blisters (cold sores) on the lips are caused by the herpes virus.

Canker sores, no, I don't believe so. Cold sores, yes, it is a form of herpes, as is chicken pox.
