You can't stop them, but you can learn to cope with them. People don't die from panic attacks, so that is the first thing you have to convince yourself of. All the symptoms - the racing pulse, the hyperventilating, the sense of impending disaster, can all be dealt with - one at a time, if need be. Doing almost anything to distract yourself will work - you can count your heart beats up to 5,000, by which time you should have calmed down. Be glad your heart is beating! As for the hyperventilating, breathe into a paper bag. This will increase the level of carbon dioxide in your blood, which will slow down your breathing. As for the sense of impending disaster, you might need some anti-anxiety medication to begin with, but learning that this is a form of catastrophizing can help a lot. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is very useful and can be learned from a book.

You can get on Clonazepam, a.k.a Klonopin. (It's kind of like a slightly lesser form of Valium or Xanax, Benzodiazepam drug family) It is a kind of strong drug and can become addicting. It works though. Especially if you are having physiological symptoms that you can not seem to control. Doctor's like to prescribe SSRI's though and not Benzodiazepem family drugs. So talk to your doctor what you think would work best for you. If it severely interferes with your life you should see someone about it immediately.

I would say you certainly need to see a doctor, because several things can cause panic attacks. Please don't just take supplements and hope they will work.
