Ignore the answer that says there is a cure, because there is NOT a cure for diabetes yet (though research is always being conducted to find one). Your doctor is right to check again in a week because whatever brought you to the ER was obviously a huge stress on your body and stress CAN affect blood sugar. There is always a possibility that anyone can have diabetes and be unaware of it. Stay calm and wait until you visit your doctor again to see what is really going on. Hopefully you have nothing to worry about. Best wishes.

No. Just the stress of being at the ER is enough to cause higher glucose levels. Many hospitals are now monitoring patients without diabetes as higher glucose levels cause problems with healing even with those who do not have diabetes. Once the person is better the glucose levels go back to normal and they need no further treatment. Also, the diagnosing criteria for random testing, like you had, is 200 or higher with symptoms. You should check into it further, have a glucose tolerance test done. Even though I wouldn't worry to much about it, you could still potentially have diabetes, or maybe prediabetes, but based on just this information and the circumstances of your visit and tests it's definitely not something to get to worried abo.ut. Take care

I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes a few years ago.
The doctor may do a fasting test to determine if you are diabetic. You will have to fast for 3 days before the test. You will only be permitted to have water. If the results of the test show high blood sugar, you may have Diabetes.
There are many different factors that can raise blood sugar : food, stress, emotional upset, not enough exercise. Do you have high blood pressure? Often, Diabetes and hypertension go hand in hand. The good news is if you control one, you usually control the other.
I wish you the best of luck. If it turns out you are diabetic, it is a treatable condition that many people live with...so don't worry.

First, ignore the person who said "curable". Diabetes cannot be cured. Type 2 can be controlled with diet and exercise. Notice the difference. Controlled means you still have it and need to take special precautions.
Second, you'll need to talk to your doctor about the specifics. There are different tests they can do to check if you have diabetes. A fasting blood glucose is the best indicator. A Hemoglobin A1c can be done to check your average over the past 3 months.
Normal blood sugar level is between 60-105. Normal A1c is below 7.0.

It is a possibility that you could have diabetes, but don't freak out just yet. You could be pre diabetic, in which case it's a warning sign. Watch what you eat; keep sugars and carbs down to a minimum and DON'T miss your appointment with the doctor. Good luck.

Your doctor sounds sensible. The reading is sufficiently high to indicate proper diagnostic testing should be done.
Check with the doc to see whether that next test should be fasting or after a meal.
Whatever the result, if you need to improve your fitness use it as an early warning signal.
