I've been controlling my blood glucose levels successfully for the last 4 years by following a low glycemic index diet.
I used to be on metformin but quit the medication after I decided to follow a strict low gi diet. Don't let the word "strict" scare you.
Someone already mentioned the Canadian Diabetes website. They promote GI, unlike the US one.

there's lot's of food "plans" out there, but if you educate yourself with the basic principles of GI, you may find that you'll have better control of your sugar levels without denying too many foods. It's all about eating smarter, and exercise.

Controlling diabetes usually starts with discipline. Living with diabetes isn't about "dieting", it's about changing your lifestyle. Eating habits MUST change so that you control sugar intake. Don't forget, carbohydrates (breads, pasta, etc) are converted to sugars, so you'll need to monitor your intake of those types of foods, too.
This change in lifestyle not only means watching WHAT you eat, but also when and how often you eat it. Diabetics will usually benefit from smaller, more frequent meals.
My cousin, who was diagnosed as an uncontrolled diabetic, righted all of his wrongs by eating five meals a day, eating little (controlled) meals at each sitting.

The best way to control it is to understand what it is. Diabetes is when you have way too much sugar in your blood. Normally, when some one eats a donut all the sugar goes in the blood and is then given to the muscles to allow energy to be gained. When a person has diabetes the glucose amount is very high and the insulin made from your body can not lower your sugar. My mom and dad have diabetes and I help them control it. I was introduced to a drink called MONA vie and let me tell u something it works. My mom is always taking meds and is still not able to control it but when she started drinking MONA VIE, she has energy, her sugar is at a balance and she tells me that she feels great. there are many ways to control it. exercise regularly, and eat right. for a diabetic this means, take the total number of calories that you usually eat in a day, and divide it by 7. the resulting number is the grams of carb's you should have. for most diabetics, this is under 300 (on a 2000 calorie diet). for your exercise program, this means 1/2 hour of stressful exercise per day (recommended).
the last option is medicine. all the others should be tried before any medicine is used. i could go on forever about what medicines are used for what, but the lifestyle changes will have more of a pronounced effect.

It depends on what type of diabetes you have as well as other things. You should take a class on diabetes and or see a diabetes educator. They will help you get in control. And provide you with the knowledge you need to stay in control.

I depends what type of diabetes you have.
If it is type 2, then control is a combination of the correct way of eating, moderate regular exercise, maintaining a reasonable weight for your height, and medications or insulin prescribed by a doctor if needed.

Assuming you have diabetes that can be controlled with diet alone, rather than the insulin dependant type, you need to be eating foods that are low on the glycemic index.
The glycemic index is a list of foods that consist mainly of carbohydrates (dairy & proteins will not be included) that ranks them based on how quickly they raise blood sugar levels. The faster they digest/breakdown into sugar, the higher the number on the index.

Unfortunately you have left out a lot of important information like what type you have, if you are on medication or insulin, if you eat properly and exercise, etc... There are so many factors involved in good blood sugar control. If you are eating properly and getting plenty of exercise you may need to adjust your medications or insulin. Talk to your doctor since he/she knows better than anyone her of your condition, your overall health and your diet. Best wishes.
