At my uncle's 90th birthday, they had a DVD with lots of family photos. They also passed around postcards and we all wrote something we remember or like about him. Another thing they did was had everyone sign a guest book. They had these papers on the tables too they told what life was like when he was born, and all the things that have happened during his lifetime. It was really interesting!

Take him back to the 1920s. Have a speakeasy where there's an open bar and a gypsy telling fortunes. Music can be played from that era, the Charleston and the like. Organize games where everyone has to come dressed in 1920s ensemble. Instead of fancy party food, cook simple fare like meatloaf and mashed potatoes to remind him of the times he used to have. Let him share the wonderful stories he had growing up. It's a great way to party and bonding. Oh, apple cider is excellent for this party.

From my experience when giving an older loved one a party ,they always have enjoyed just being around friends and family who all put aside time to get together and celebrate their special day. It isn't often when everybody can be in the same place at the same time. Maybe some music from their era would be nice.

You could do a powerpoint slideshow of pictures from when he was younger, and different events that happened in his lifetime. Fondue would be a good theme. It gives everyone a chance to mingle and you can have the slideshow playing on a TV or on a projector throughout the party.

How about on a cruise ship. Here in Philly there's ships that just stay around the area but they have parties on them. Or a lot of rooms at a casino is special.

Get all of his friends (the ones that are still alive) and invite family over. Show some home video's of him when he was younger or show some pictures so they could jog his memory. Don't over do it and have something small so he could remember this special day for him with all his family and friends near him. Ask people to bring something to eat so you don't have to do all the cooking and have a simple cake with two candles - a 9 and a 0 for his age.
