what are the advantages of SIMV in general?

Patient can take breaths when they want to and the vent assists when needed. This way the patient is still working to breath rather than the vent doing all the work. Some docs do not use it...they figure either you need mechanical ventilation or you don't. I like to use it to see if the patient can be weaned off the vent or not.
