Hello!!!
First of all, there have been some nice answers here, but also some disrespectful ones.
Who cares about the way you stated your question. The bottomline is that you have a good heart and want to make a change.
I would recommend going vegetarian first!
You would no longer be eating animal meats but would only have to pay attention to the obvious things, like burgers, steak, chicken, and so on.
Once you decide on being Vegan that will all get alot more complicated.
You can make a very big change by being a vegetarian and getting settled in that.
Once you are comfortable you can take baby steps towards veganism!
Now, I agree that if your mom will, you should make her watch the video and tell her that this is part of the reason you won't be eating any meat anymore.
Ask her to please respect your decision.
IF by some chance she is not cooperative then show her how sure you are of your decision by sticking to it!
Good luck!!!!

Well, I don't know exactly what you should say, but your actions will mean a lot, and will speak for themselves.
Help cook, particularly anything you are eating that the rest of your family won't.
Don't compromise. The first time after announcing your veganism that you eat anything that doesn't fit with it, you've lost the battle.
If she won't get certain things for you, like tofu or something, buy it yourself. You might have to hold off on a new cd or something for a bit, but it will certainly show your commitment.
But as far as talking to her, I do have a little bit of advice: speak carefully and highlight health benefits of becoming a vegan instead of focusing on moral views even if morals are your main reason for becoming vegan. Health can be supported by scientific fact. Morals can make a person who doesn't share your views feel under attack, and you don't want to make her defensive.
Also, don't mention PETA at first. If you don't think she will support you being vegan, then she probably isn't a supporter of the group, and PETA is an extremely polarizing organization. Kinda like the NRA, I don't know anyone who doesn't have a strong opinion about the group.
Best leave the political and moral topics to the side for now, and ease her into accepting a big lifestyle change for you.
Good luck.

I highly support your decision to be a vegetarian (or vegan, whatever you choose). It is considered to be an excellent diet according to medical professionals like doctors and dietitians. I think your best bet is to find research from reliable sources like the American Dietetic Association, and show it to your mom.
overall, the decision to become vegan or vegetarian is ONLY yours. You are ultimately the one who decides what food goes in your stomach. Further, ignore the people out there that say negative things about vegetarians. They have NOT done any research, or else they would see that being a vegetarian is extremely good for you. Also, people will not think you are a freak. It si completely normal to go veggie. Additionally, it is not any other persons' business- only yours. Vegetarianism is becoming very popular these days for various reasons, and a lot of restaurants and grocery stores now offer veggie options.
Good Luck

Sigh. What kind of research have you done? Do you know how to get complete proteins without meat/butter/eggs/cheese etc.? Do you know the difference between vegetarian and vegan?
I'm asking these things because you don't seem very educated. I'm sorry, but your writing tells me you are either VERY young or very ignorant. Being vegan isn't easy if you want to stay healthy, especially if you are still growing. You also mention that you got your information from peta2.com. Although they DO go in for sensationalism and particularly target the young, it would behoove you to do some actual research outside of Peta propaganda. Talk to some health professionals and learn what you intend to embrace. It doesn't HAVE to be unhealthy to be vegan, but if you go into it blindly it WILL be unhealthy.
I'm not trying to talk you out of your choice, I'm just trying to open your eyes a bit for your own good. I was vegetarian for several years. It took work to keep my diet balanced and healthy. The vegan lifestyle is MUCH more difficult.

I'd show her the vid! lol i didn't have to 'tell' my mum as such cuz i do what i like regardless, but i did try showing her the video, as i thought, as soon as people were enlightened (i thought that was all that was needed, i thought people just didn't know!) they'd suddenly feel the shame that i did. but i was utterly disappointed in humanity! she ate a steak about 5 mins later. some people just don't understand, don't have the empathy, whatever. there's not really any way you can make someone understand (i don't think we'd have war, famine etc etc if there was). i think you just need to tell her that you refuse to directly contribute to the suffering, and pay for the slaughter of animals any longer,(its not really alot to ask!) that its cheaper and healthier, that you don't expect people to go out of their way for you, you'll take it upon yourself, and that you won't preach to her as shes eating her big mac. i hope this helps and good luck! i truly believe that people will look back in years to come and say 'i can't believe they still ate meat in the 20th century! isn't that crazy!'

Well, it depends on your age. Most children are taken by fads, and peer pressure. She will not respect your "Lifestyle Changes" until you are old enough to afford the consequences of your actions. Remember, if we all switched to vegan, the world would over populate with animals, then the human race would die out from starvation. We eat animals as a way to preserve Human life. Not to punish animal life. I never listen to my children over petty things. Now that they are old enough, they thank me for not allowing them to get into silly situations that all their friends have had to deal with. Part of being a parent is to be able to accept making decisions for others. We are not always correct, but we are never wrong.

She might now understand, but who cares. I am a vegetarian and everyone thinks I am a freak. But I don't care. You feel how you feel and there is nothing wrong with that. Don't let people give you crap about it because let me tell you, people are going to try to talk you out of it. They will bring religion into it and everything else. Be tough and know what you stand for. That is my advice.

If you are vegan then that also means you can't use some toothpastes, if you are female that means no lipstick, no chewing gum, veganism is a life commitment that is not easy, and you will have to take supplemental vitamins for the rest of your life to replace what you are losing by not eating any protein. I know vegans and they are thin, pale people, not that all vegan's are, but the ones I know are because they have no protein. You need protein, why can't you be vegetarian, and eat eggs, drink milk, use butter. Those come from animals yet animals are not killed in the process.
I personally eat meat, I eat Elk, Deer, Wild Duck, Antelope. I hunt and I eat what I kill.

The fact that you are making this decision based on some PETA information is reason enough not to respect it. Meat IS NOT BAD FOR YOU. Our bodies are designed to ingest/digest meat, and they need it for a healthy lifestyle. Meat is a source of nutrients that can be very hard to find anyone else in nature.
Also, you think you are saving animals? If everyone in the world stopped eating beef, for example, what do you think happens to the cattle? They become extinct. Beef cattle have no use besides food... so instead of the few years of leisure life they enjoy right now, they won't live at all. No one is going to pay to keep a domestic animal like cattle (or any other aminal) around if they can't profit from it. If we all became vegans, we would be responsible for the extinction of cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, among other animals, and drastically cut down on the number of goats and sheep in the world. And before you start hating hunting... if we stopped hunting today, entire ecosystems would get out of wack. Deer population would take off to begin with, triggering a rise in say mountain lions, but then deer would live beyond the means of their environment and die from starvation and disease. Now you have excessive numbers of cougars who will start dying off from the same reasons. Instead of healthy, stable ecosystems, you have one that sea-saws, filled with very unhealthy wildlife. I just wish people would research these issues more before listening to a fanatical, ignorant, insane, and hypocritical group like PETA.
BTW, one more thing, murder is the unlawful killing of one human being by another. Killing an animal is in no way, regardless of the reason, murder... so please don't use that term. If you feel it's cruel, fine, but that's different.
