Yes it can kill you. diabetes has a list of effects the length of my arm but you will not need to worry about most of them until after you are diagnosed with the condition. Depending on the type of diabetes you have you can actually live for months or even years without any life threatening issues. Type 2 diabetics can sometimes control the condition with simple diet and excerise, while type 1 or insulin dependent can only survive for short periods of time without injections. My grandmother needs to take an injection after each meal, while my father just needs to take pills to help maintain his sugar levels. If you are haveing sugar problems you will normally get disorientated, have problems with your vision, and often your breath will smell much like you have been drinking liquor. these are sure fire signs that you are heading into Diabetic shock.
