I use soymilk for the most part, but I still use cheese's. That is about it. The reason for the question is I was at the grocery store, and I was at the checkout counter, they lady commented about all the veggies and misc..........I told her I was a vegetarian. She saw cheese and said I was not really a vegetarian, so I wanted to know.

well, eitha da lady at da checkout was Vegan(someone who dont eat ANY animal product) or a complete non-vegetarian. there r all types of vegetarians...even ppl who eat fish, but no otha meat is vegetarian. they called pesca-vegetarians. the least strict vegetarian is a pesca-ovo-vegetarian, who allows fish n eggs. and, surprisingly, the most strict vegetarian is NOT a Vegan...but a fruitarian. fruitarians eat only fruit, nuts...things like that. well, sometimes certain cheeses contain animal rennet(intenstines left from animal slaughter) seriously...avoid hard cheeses. i think ricotta has it, and maybe swiss. not sure, but BEFORE u buy cheese, thuroughly read for animal rennet...usually listed as just "rennet". if u dnt trust it, dnt buy it. Also, beware of some of ur yogurts, and factory made products, sour creams...things like that. a lot of em contain the popular ingredient...gelatin! gelatin comes from da hooves of slaughtered animals...so if u completely against animal slaughter, id advise to give up gelatin...which means, NO Skittles...so many ppl that become vegetarian aint aware of that, and a lot dont eat skittles. I suggest tryna get some groceries at cheaper markets sellin organic goods. here in cleveland we got the West Side Market, and OMG i love it there! whenever i get a chance and da $$$ i go there. bein a vegetarian aint that hard at all, honestly. for some ppl its a lil dificult at first, and u may fall back a few times, but dont worry...keep it up, its a verry healthy way to be. dnt fall for ppl who r non-veg who tell u to eat meat, and they WILL try to convince u that u gonna get sick w/o meat...but DONT fall for it! if u make sure u get enough protein, n iron...u will be fine! eat lots of heavy greens, like spinach, collard n mustard greens(very good)...beans, lentils(also called daal). think of it this way: most recipes r vegetarian to begin w...meat is just added on! its the seasonin that keeps food tasty...not the meat! keep it goin! u gonna b fine...n prove ppl wrong, and it keeps a high will-power goin on! g'luck!

Some people think there's animal rennant in all cheese! It's in most but not all! If you get the cheese free of animal rennant then U are Vegetarian still but if there's animal rennant in it just say you're mostly Vegetarian. I eat cheese myself if I can't get the one's free of Animal rennant then I will get the one with it! Animal rennant is sometimes in cottage cheese too! I'm glad I'm not trying to be a vegan! Vegetarians just don't eat animals U can use milk products free of animal rennant and remain vegetarian. Buttermilk sometimes contains aninmal rennant!

yes you are still considered a vegetarian, if you dont consume the MEAT of the animal, the lady at the counter was probably refering to being a VEGAN, that is a person that does not consume any animal BI products and meat . . . I dont eat eggs or animal meat and when i can i will substitute the other stuff for soy, like soy cheese etc. . .as far as milk goes im allergic to that so i've always had to drink soy milk. . . but you are still a vegetarian, and the reason why vegans dont eat ANY animal product is the cruelty lifestyles that are inflicted on animals that are not just for slaughter for there meat but also milk cows and chickens that are specifically meant for laying eggs, they are treated just as cruel as any other animal for there meat. . . its really just a preferance, and what you believe in and dont let other people tell you what you are and what you arent, especially some stupid woman at the grocery store, when you probably didnt ask for her opinion in the first place!

Many cheeses are not vegetarian. One answer above mentions rennet--that's animal stomach. Cheesemakers often use rennet or even blood to curdle milk to make cheese. There are many vegetarian cheeses on the market, though. This web site lists many vegetarian cheeses and also some vegan alternatives.

Yes you are a vegetarian and I think that is great .!.. The woman was misinformed and some people like to comment that if you are not 100 percent then you are nothing..somehow it makes them feel better..but don't worry ...just a note..most vegans were vegetarians that ate cheese and over time stopped..

Yes, you're a lacto-vegetarian.

What all vegetarians have in common is that they don't eat animal flesh.

Lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat dairy and eggs.
Ovo-vegetarians eat eggs, but no dairy.
Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy but no eggs.

Vegans eat no animal products at all (including things like honey), and often also try to avoid clothing made from animal products, such as wool or leather.

Don't listen to anyone about what you 'are'.
Eat what your body says is good for you.
And for the record, you ARE Vegetarian, even when drinking milk/eating cheese, unless you eat meat, fish or chicken.
Good luck

A Vegan does not eat meat or any dairy products or anything that came from an animal. Vegetarians will eat dairy products like cheese and milk, but the majority will become lactose intolerant.
