It 's when the level of drug in a persons system is too high. It can happen from taking to much, or food interacting with the medicine and causing it to rise. Or, sometimes people get sick or dehydrated, and the bodies organs have trouble 'clearing' it from the system. Usually if someone comes in and their level is high, the biggest concern is low heart rate. Sometimes temporary pacemakers are needed until the drug clears. Digoxin or Lanoxin is a medicine prescribed to slow and strenghten the heart beat.

Digitalis intoxication is among the most common serious adverse drug reactions in clinical medicine. While the recent development of a radioimmunoassay to accurately measure serum concentrations of digoxin has been of assistance, digitalis intoxication remains a difficult diagnosis to make with certainty. The difficulty in diagnosing digitalis intoxication arises from the nonspecificity of its associated signs and symptoms. The most common symptoms include fatigue, weakness, nausea, and anorexia.
The arrhythmias commonly associated with digitalis toxicity are often nonspecific and can be a reflection of the patient's underlying heart disease.
