What you need is soy butter. Margarine is chemically altered milk. You don't want that. After years of telling us margarine is better than butter, they've now found that chemically altering milk to make it less fattening is - golly gee- toxic.

Go with Soy Garden or Earth Balance vegan butters. Gotta watch the Soy Garden. It's so yummy I can eat it all day.

Anything by Earth Balance (not to be confused with Smart Balance) is fantastic. They have margarine in a tub and also in sticks. Earth Balance is all vegan and also healthier than most margaines because it contains no trans fats. It is also the best-tasting butter substitute I have had. They make a shortening, too, but I haven't tried it. Good luck!

The recommendations for EarthBalance are correct. You can find Spectrum but I wouldn't wish that stuff on my worst enemy. Look for EB at any *real* health food store and most Kroger stores.(they may not be in your market under that name but they have 'franchises' in most of the US). It's worth hunting down!
In a pinch you can check the bottles of Squeeze Parkay and the Parkay Light sticks. Sometimes those are vegan, but be warned that they sometimes they aren't safe! There are other brands that I've seen people mention in the past but when I've checked them they aren't vegan. Most margarines are produced under franchise and so different areas and batches will have different ingredients. The *really* evil thing about sticks is that the ingredients listed on the stick are often different than what's listed on the box!

Hi Anne, Sainsbury's 'Free from' margarine is vegan so is a brand called 'pure' available in Sainbury's and Holland and Barratt in the UK . If you are in the US ask our Top answerer on here, Greenghost (Yes, I mentioned you again , pal ;0) !!) He is an American guy and really helpful.
