Usually supression dose is 500 mg daily. The dosage is basically assessed through scientific experiments called Random Clinical Trials which use people as well as animals. Different dosages are tried in accordance with a model of "what should work" which is based on extensive and existing research. This is discussed within the link I've attached under Clinical Trials. Scientists design these types of trials, publish them in empirical studies, and doctors read them and apply them (with individualized moderations) within their practise.
