He smokes A pack of cigarettes a day, BUT Dosn't Eat meat, Eats healthy, hardly eats any dairy, and it dosn't run in his family. Also regular blood pressure and his body is very fit. Im just curious considering this is about my husband. I know smoking gives it a RISK, but so does everything else. So I was just wondering since it dosn't run in his family and he dosn't eat meat or much dairy, would his heart be something to worry about? Or would it be more of the LUNGs and cancers to worry about?

Heart attacks don't have to run in your family. Genetics plays a small role in these types of things. Research has even found that unless you posess a specific gene your chances of getting cancer are about the same as everyone else without a family history.
As for the smoking... smoke and tar make the artery walls sticky. This causes plak to stick to the walls of blood vessels. Not only is this seriously upping his chances of heart attack, mouth, tongue and lung cancer, he is damaging EVERY organ in his body. He is upping his chances for renal failure, kidney stones, stroke, etc. etc. etc.

As a healthcare provider I find this question interesting. The cigarettes are a definate cardiac risk. (What is his cholesterol?) Does he regularly exercise? What is his age? Nevertheless, for someone concerned about health, why is not the risks associated with cigarettes not as alarming? Actually "everything else' is not a
risk. I find when it comes to cigarettes, people tend to tell themselves anything that allows them to continue doing it. Like ,"Well, you have to die from something" ...but I have been there whenever a patient is told, "I'm sorry. You have cancer." In all my thirtysome years I have yet to hear someone say, "Well, you have to die from something." The response is always crushing. Don't fool yourself. If the time comes whenever your husband would like to quit, we have an excellent medication that has just come out to help. It is called Chantix and I have had more patients sucessfully quit smoking with this drug than with anything that we have had up till now.

Back in the day we used real live dogs and injected them with nicotine just to watch the effect on the heart. OMG, it was disturbing. Of course, med schools don't do dog labs anymore, but people still use nicotine. (Dogs can't be mistreated, but people can mistreat themselves, LOL) Yes, cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease, but more especially sudden death (cardiac arrest) due to arrhythmia. Does your husband want to stop? There are many new options out there to help with the nicotine addiction. Think of all the money he could save...no cigarettes, fewer respiratory illnesses, and less doctor bills! Plus the peace of mind is priceless. Try not to nag, but just encourage him to see his doctor about some of the new medications available. I once had a heroin addict tell me that stopping smoking was harder for him than giving up his drug habit! I was shocked! Good luck, and be supportive.

I'm not expert, but I've heard that smoking a pack of cigarettes a day will slash ( on average ) 3 - 5 years off your life span. However, it is more likely that lung cancer will take him before heart disease does.
