Glow Stick Helps Identify Precancerous Cells

WESTFIELD, Ind. -- On average, oral cancer claims a life once per
hour in the U.S., but a new tool can detect the disease earlier than
ever, offering hope that lives can be saved.
Most people think of chewing tobacco when they hear about oral
cancer, but the disease is not confined to that activity.
Oral cancer is increasing among women, due in part to human
papillomavirus, or HPV. Kathleen Taflinger contracted HPV in her
early 20s.
"The virus unfortunately stays in your body forever. Once you get it,
you get to keep it," Taflinger said.
Studies have shown that a quarter of oral cancer cases are linked to
HPV, the same bug that causes cervical cancer.
ViziLite is a new tool that can help dentists detect precancerous
cells earlier than possible before. It's a glow stick that spots
abnormalities not visible to the naked eye.
"Once we shine this little glow stick on it, normal cells will absorb
the light, so they appear dark, while abnormal cells will reflect the
light," said Dr. Brad Gray of Westfield Dental Center. "They will
give off the little white glow, and that's what we're looking for."
ViziLite offers the promise that one of the most horribly disfiguring
and deadly diseases can be stopped before it's too late.
ViziLite is covered by many insurance plans, but costs about $63.
