I gave part of this answer to a similar question recently, and I include that in my answer for you-
Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation (x-ray). Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels. This method is a useful way of examining many of the body's internal organs, including, but not limited to the: liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, and unborn child (foetus) in pregnant patients.
Hope this helps

Ultrasounds are the best diagnostic tools to show gallstones. They can visualize stones and also measure the gallbadder wall thickness and also the common bile duct size. A CT Scan of the abdomen can also visualize gallstones as well but it is more expensive and can't give much information about the biliary duct systems.

An Ultrasound ins't THE best way to actually see them, however, it is just as effective as any other method. You are asking your insureance company to cover a bill for thousands of dollars to cover a test that will give you the very same results as a test 1/100th of the price.
In the end, an ultrasound is a perfectly fine way to find the stones, you aren't going to get "better" results by at CT or other test.
