When you pass out, the autonomic system takes over

Actually, the primary urge to breathe does not come from a lack of oxygen, but rather an excess of carbon dioxide. The central chemoreceptors in the brain measure increased levels of CO2, and cause you to breathe.
There are other peripheral chemoreceptors in the aortic arch, and the coratid arteries that measure O2 levels, and act as a secondary "backup" system that will also cause you to breathe.

Hi there,

We all have a natural built in defense mechanism (proper name for it escapes me for the moment) that forces us to breath: we instinctively have a compelling desire to live! You can train to hold your breath for long periods of times but eventually your brain will kick in and make you take a breath.

Cheers.

You will pass out before you die, when you hit the ground you will resume breathing.

Because you pass out from lack of oxygen and the body's natural instinct is to breath.

The part of the brain that controls breathing (medulla?) overrides you from holding your breath and makes you continue breathing.

because if you hold your breath for long enough, you pass out, and thus, you are forced to breathe again.

Reflexs will take over. When you loose oxygen your muscles will relax causing you to stop holding your breath.

Your body will force you to breath. But hanging yourself is different. Because its not you who is stoping your breathing, so that way you couldn't breath.

...because you will become unconscious and your involuntary systems will quickly restore breathing without you doing a thing...but... in holding your breath you might damage some "stuff" that is irreparable... just "breath".....
